Their independent workers, you don't go to the hairderesser and tip them for doing your hair, do you?! No, you just pay them for their services and independent contractors or business owners don't get tipped - they get paid for their services to you. Never tip them at all because they make their own money off of you. Take a business owner, for instance, he has people who work for him and they get paid by him while they do work for you but the business owner gets paid yearly by the IRS and the government. Or an independent contractor, you pay him for Services and so goes for the independent hairdresser or massage therapist.
Just Remember: people who work independently choose their own pices for You to pay them!

Yes. Definitely. They have more overhead margins to deal with, they're not putting 100% of what you give them into their personal checking, they've got bills for the business to pay. And they're doing the same service as someone making X/hour being employed by a company.

When I had my restaurant, many people said the service was excellent, the food was excellent, but they wouldn't tip me as their waitress saying that since I was the owner I must be rolling in the dough. Nope, I definitely wasn't. So it was like working my butt off for free. What went in my register was all for restaurant expenses.

Please tip them.

Yes, they do get 100% of their profits. However, much of that still goes to overhead, maintenance, etc. So yes you should tip, depending on the situation. When my house was built I didn't tip the contractor.

NO. My father purposly goes to the hairdresser owner for a haircut so he doesnt have to tip them. I have started to do the same. If you know for a fact that that person providing the service is the owner than giving them a tip is stupid.

I tend not to tip if it's the owner. Sometimes I do but not as much as if it were just an employee.

If you consider a tip a way of saying thank you for exceptional service and you receive exceptional service, than the tip will be even more appreciated because it is not obligated

It's a nice gesture. Because if you think about it they also are responsible for equipment, rent, tools. Take that into account and make your own judgement!
