well im not a mother yet..but i will be soon. But i have a lot of experience with kids..toddlers learn to talk at their own pace..every child is different. My cousin has a 18 month old boy and he talks like hes so much older..he puts words together like "i want juice" and "i dont want to" and if you ask him a question he'll answer with a yes or no. But my niece which is only a couple weeks younger than him can only say a couple words like "mama" and "dada" and "baby" so i guess it depends on the kid. He sounds like hes doing just fine! If your that worried you can ask the doctor about it. GOODLUCK!

hes not even 2 yet! dont worry. He sounds like he is doing everything normal for his age
My little one said 2 word sentences after she turned 2 and didn`t get into complex sentences until almost 3....now at almost 3 1/2 she has really complex sentences and talks CONTINIOUSLY.

The babbling in a "foreign" language is really normal. It was really funny on my daughter as she is bilingual (from birth). Both sets of (monolingual) grandparents assumed she was speaking the other language......but no....it was a language all of her own......though some bits might have an English twist whereas others sounded more Japanese......

I am a speech therapist. Below is a cool interactive developmental checklist based on age. Usually i say that at age 2 a child should be using 2-3 word sentences to communicate wants and needs. It sounds like he has a good start with receptive language (what he undersatnds). I would just make sure to require more from him when he is requesting itmes in your home: hold up 2 things and have him ask for the one he wants (Want jiuce/ milk). By modeling 2 word phrases around the home, I'm sure he will pick them up quickly.

Its important to expand his speech. For example: If he can't open the door and wants to go out... reach for the door and say :"this is door... you say it...'door.'" ... before you open it! then next time expand to "open door." then "open door please"...etc.. you can expand any phrase... while looking in books instead of just naming an object ina picture "car" say "see car" or "go car go!"

My 23 mos old son says things like "Mommy sit down". "Go outside", "cars sleeping", "wheres mommys car?" (he is fascinated with cars and trucks and starts saying those words when I first get him up and he is still groogy". It is pretty funny. So, I really think your 20 mos old is certainly on the right track. Plus, I konw of other children that did not sya anything until they were closer to 2 1/2 or 3, and now you can't stop them!

In the car on road trips I talk with him a lot. I ask him to read me the book he is looking at. Of course he really can't but it is cute to hear what "filler-words" he comes up with. I praise him a ton and he gets so proud of himself. Riding in cars are great learning places to also point out things along the road.

Anyway, soon enough, both of our kids will be talking, talking, talking!

Sounds normal to me. My daughter was making little sentences when she was that age, like two or three word sentences. and she babbled all the time. He will start talking soon enough. As long as he seems to understand and he is saying words, i wouldnt worry about it.

I wonder if lillilou realizes that she said her "20 year old" LOL

The ages 19-30 mos. they begin to talk telegraphically...this is whaty your child is doing. They will also tell the events of a day, like I played outside. At this age they also start to show sympathy, empathy. They start pretend play also. A suggestion is to read books that he can relate to,example is a book about meesy babies or so forth. This is the fun age. Give your little guy a fewmonths and he will talk away.My daughter is 3 and I tell her she is speaking Dutch..lol.

I think your child is doing awesome. Evidently he understands enough to communicate what he wants, so that is good. My daughter is 22 months and talks in big sentences, but my neice is three months behind her, and she doesn't do it as well. All children learn at their own pace. Actually, my neice has all of a sudden decided to communicate more and is speaking in sentences per today. Just give him some time, he'll surprise you soon. Don't feel bad or concerned, he's his own little man!

No problem at all. Some 2 year olds don't even say this much. It will all come together in a few more months.
This is definitely normal. Best of luck to you.
