Sometimes it lasts beyond the expiration date. You can tell if it is still good by the smell and if it starts to separate.

I'm pretty sure that yogurt is fermented by (beneficial) bacteria, not mold --cheeses are too.

So if after awhile, mold spores from the air get onto the yogurt, they will begin to multiply and show up.
I'm fairly sure I've heard that (again like cheese), at that point you can simply scrape the mold off and eat what's left of the yogurt but it may be tangier than it was when it was fresher since the bacteria will have consumed a lot more of the lactose by then. . . something like that anyway.

Like cheese, if you do want yogurt to last longer than a few weeks in the frig, you should probably keep its exposure to air as short and limited as possible, and keep as much of the suface covered directly with plastic wrap, etc., as you can --easier to do with cheese since you can keep the wrapper on most of it while just unwrapping and using it from one end, and also tightly covering any exposed areas.

I think the expiration date for unopened purchase yogurt is there mostly as a guideline to when it might start tasting more tangy than that brand usually does when it's "fresh." But it too will have been exposed to air at some point during manufacture, so eventually mold would probably show up just from that?

Well, if your lucky and the mold is not harmful then you can eat it. But if its your Unlucky Russian Roulette Day then you can try your luck.

BTW: Instead of buying expensive Yogurt from the Store. you can make your own for the price of Homo Milk.

Just boil Homo Milk till its almost overflowing the Pot. Then take it off the stove, let it cool to Body Temperature. Then take a tiny bit of Yogurt from the container you bought and add it to the warm Milk. Store it in a Dark Warm Place for 3 days. Its imperative that the place be warm or the Yogurt will not form. You should have good Yogurt in Three Days.
So half a teaspoon of Yogurt with active culture can make a whole Gallon of Your gut from Homogeneous Milk. Well, its good to use Homo Milk as the Yogurt has a better consistence and there is not much fat as the culture in yogurt converts the fat to good stuff.

Temperature and half Teaspoon of room temperature active yogurt will make you some might good Yogurt

Try it, you'll be safe.

Then store it in the Fridge.

I think it is OK. As long as it is not too old.
We keep home made Yogurt for days.
Unless it gets moldy.
Do a taste check .
