Science isn't out to disprove religion. God can neither be proved nor disproved, that is why the creationists think they have a leg to stand on.
Science is out to find and explain what appears to happen in the world around us.
The reason that evolution is used as a topic, is that creationists see it as the scientific opposition to their argument. Which it is.

Without a God the arguments you call profound are non-existant. With or without postulating God, one cannot prove or disprove the effectiveness of prayer; as it does not exist or is non-functional outside of the realm of faith.
For example, my personal belief is largely if not totally based on answered prayer. Proof for me, but not for you. The only thing left for you is to believe my testimoney. And that is how it works.
As to contradictions 90 per cent of them have been asked and answered over and over again for hundreds of years. At least 60 per cent of them were caused by misguided Christian theologians. The remaining eight per cent await scientific discovery. The final two per cent I have from God of things which go beyond satisfaction.
In the case of evolution the connection to atheism is simple rationalization. This is not a criticism. By nature we all must rationalize our belief system. The bottom line is (I think Popeye said this) "Yuh puts ur money down and yuh takes ur choice.

Atheism has nothing to do with evolution. Evolution is simply a natural process. Atheists view it atheistically and theists view it theistically. Which is likewise true of every other natural process.

i've never heard the two linked in any sort of scholarly way by anyone ever.
however, if religion is just a series of right wing talking points, i can see why you might get that impression.
i would say that you need to expand your horizons and get more points of view from better informed people - i think you will be amazed at what you learn...

I don't think that evolution is used as an argument "for" atheism.
Evolution has nothing to do with believing or disbelieving in god(s).

I know of no atheists who proactively point to evolution as proof against a deity.
Any atheist who does needs to learn a bit more theology before he opens his mouth and removes all doubt again.

If I was a liberal Christian who believed that the modern sciences were based on evidence rather that Satan. I would be extremely embarrassed by the foolish things said by creationists.

A fringe group of loud Christians have framed the debate in that manner.
That even Darwin wasn't an atheist is lost on them.

Many, many theists recognize that evolution is a fact. This is not unique to atheists.
