It seems to me that Himmler and Moses had a lot in common. Both thought it best to get rid of the children. This isn't the only genocide or ethnic cleansing event recorded in the bible.

Moses told the Israelite soldiers to exterminate the little boys and the non-virgin women (wives, mothers, grannies, etc.) and Himmler debated with the other Nazis as to whether they should let the children live... he thought not, because they might take revenge for the murder of their families later on. It seems to me that Moses' reasoning wasn't too far off from Himmler's- ergo, they were both, as you say, "Gross".

Oh and don't forget, Moses said the soldiers could keep the little girls (virgins) for their own use. That seems pretty SICK to me. It's all there in your precious holy bible!

The "males" as you called them, were LITTLE BOYS. Any moral person can only conclude that Yahweh = evil.

WOW. All of the religious answerers just completely ignored the whole point of my question. Or maybe they really believe that killing others for their religion and ethnicity is justified. No wonder the world is constantly at war.

Do you know anything about Baalim the Priest? The Medianites were living by his council, in other words, listening to that priest instead of to God. This is actually quite an interesting lesson, if you give it a chance. Baalim didn't really care what sins the people comitted, as long as he could get them to pay money, and then he would give them some little pennance to say, and call it "all good". Did you rape women? say five hail marys and put money in the collectors plate, and I'll say a good word to God for you. Sound like any churches of today? These people knew better, but hid themselves and their (horrible) sins behind this terrible priest, who cared nothing for God, only for his wallet. Does THIS sound familiar? With what was going on, the women didn't know what kind of children they were having - many were breeds of sisters or brothers and were being born deformed, etc. You blame Moses, but actually he didn't want to kill the women who had mated or the children, but did so at the direct order of God, so if you want to blame someone, go ahead and blame God.
The main problem here was, that this idea of sin and then pay money to cleanse yourself, was beginning to spread into the Tribes of Israel. This was no-doubt satans doing, because he was constantly, even from the Garden of Eden, trying to pollute the pure bloodline that down the ages, womb-to-womb would come the Christ.
This had to be stopped, and was, period.
Esspecially the Priest line being polluted was an atrocity. Don't forget that Christ was born not only of the Tribe of Judah, which was the king line, but also of the Levites, which was the Priest line - making Christ King and High Priest. God was not going to tolerate the priest line being as it was.
Todays priests are not any better, so this might be a lesson to someone who is considering teaching behind a pulpit.
Teaching lies and false doctrine will get you one thing: death of the soul. People of today know better just as they did back with good 'ol baalim. God is not a happy camper with whats going on, and it will be dealt with, like it or not.

No defense of either one is necessary. Back then, war wasn't the "push a button, wipe out a village from hundreds of miles away" business that it is now. It was pure survival, and either you killed off the enemy or he'd kill you.
The Midianites had been a thorn in the Israelites' side for years, attempting to lure them away from God and into idol worship. God knew that the Midianites were like kudzu -- either take them out by the roots, or they'd swarm all over Israel and choke the spiritual life out of His chosen people. That's why He ordered the Israelites to kill the males who were members of the false religion and the women who'd already been indoctrinated by their husbands.
That was a common practice among many nations, by the way -- not just Israel. Like I said, war was an entirely different business back then, and you can't judge it by today's mindset.
And, as others have already pointed out, God doesn't tolerate evil in any form -- at least not indefinitely. The Midianites were long overdue for judgment because of their evil. . .just like some other nations I can think of.

The Madianites are slain for having drawn the people of Israel into sin.
Book Of Numbers
Chapter 31
16 Are not these they, that deceived the children of Israel by the counsel of Balaam, and made you transgress against the Lord by the sin of Phogor, for which also the people was punished? 17 Therefore kill all that are of the male sex, even of the children: and put to death the women, that have carnally known men. 18 But the girls, and all the women that are virgins save for yourselves: 19 And stay without the camp seven days. He that hath killed a man, or touched one that is killed, shall be purified the third day and the seventh day. 20 And of all the spoil, every garment, or vessel, or any thing made for use, of the skins, or hair of goats, or of wood, shall be purified.
16 "The sin of Phogor"... The sin committed in the worship of Beelphegor.
17 "Of the children"... Women and children, ordinarily speaking, were not to be killed in war, Deut. 20. 14. But the great Lord of life and death was pleased to order it otherwise in the present case, in detestation of the wickedness of this people, who by the counsel of Balaam, had sent their women among the Israelites on purpose to draw them from God.

Wow. You're RIGHT! Those children of Israel were real little monsters! 31:9 - And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods...
Oh, wait. You said they killed the children. As I see it, the kids were the ones DOING the killing!
Or maybe God was protecting His People from being polluted by the false gods of the Midianites in the only way possible. Wow. What does that say about the real solution to the problem of Arab terrorists???

Keep in mind who Israel was suppose to be - God's people.
In Numbers 25:16,17,18 God tells you why He did it.
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Vex the Midianites, and smith them:
For they vex you with their wiles (tricks & schemes)
wherewith they have beguiled you
in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi,
the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister,
which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
Balaam advised this in order to compromise Israel, whom he could not curse. You can't curse who God blesses and Israel was blessed by God at that moment. Baal of Peor the Canaanite fertility god, whose worship consistently caused problems in Israel. By participating in this cult, a plague broke out killing 24,000 people. Prostitution was a common feature of Canaanite religion and Baal Peor got Israel to participate in pagan sacrifices and bowed down to other gods. The very first commandment is "put no other gods before Me."
So God wiped these idol worshiping, wicked, fornicating, evil people off the face of the earth. Was not the first time God did it and it will not be the last. Doesn't matter whether you like it or not - you aren't God.
How many times does God need to tell us if we are going to live like this we are going to be put to death? Himmler was a wicked monster. Moses was a righteous man.
God doesn't want His people polluted by evil today and He will eventually wipe evil off of His earth. The only change we have is the blood of Jesus which washes us white as snow and makes us acceptable to God the Father who is an all-consuming fire.

Yes, the bible records some horrific details. It is a historical account, warts and all, of God's revelation to mankind. It also reflects the contexts of the periods under question. That mankind was slipping fast into utter depravity was reason enough for the creator of mankind to act. God was perfectly within His righteousness to deliver the ultimate justice to the unrepentant. Indeed, one person has found the total body count in the bible to be over 2.2 million persons. But let's not forget the total numbers of those that have repented after hearing God's call to righteousness.
Some will say, “But isn't God unjust to judge the whole world by Christian standards?”
God judges justly. “All who sinned without [knowing] the [Mosaic] law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law” (ROM 2:12).
Even pagans know “that what the law requires is written on their hearts” (ROM 2:15) if we honestly consult our hearts, we will find two truths: that we know what we ought to do and be, and that we fail to do and be that.
Although this may seem appalling to consider it is God's right to bring judgment on whom He desires, when He desires, through whom He desires, in the manner that He desires. Man simply does not have all of the knowledge required to judge God on this issue. The amazing thing is that God was as long suffering with sinful people as He was. What better way to impress upon God's children the sinfulness of sin than to have them administer a punishment for sin?
It is also true that the nations God commanded Israel to destroy (i.e. Amorite, Canaanites, Midianites) had enticed Israel to sin. God desired to put an end to Idolatry. What better way to eliminate Idolatry than to completely destroy the entire Nation responsible?
Women and children were part of God's judgment in order to completely destroy the influence and Idolatry of the foreign nation.
Although Israel returned to Idolatry time and time again, the Nations judged by God were responsible for their own sin.
It matters not how or when a person dies. It matters what a person's relationship to God is. If children are "innocent" they will be judged by God as such even if they die as part of Gods judgment against the nation in which they live.
In Romans 11:22 we read:
"Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off."

Sure...defending Moses is easy. God charges Moses with maintaining the spiritual purity and monitoring the behavior of the Hebrews. The Midianites agressively attempt to destroy that and God commands that they be punished.
If you have a problem with that, ask God to defend himself. He loves getting calls like that.

...who has been teaching you...? "lad", God has commanded the "killing" of many... remember, His Commandments do NOT say... thou shall not kill...
it says, "thou shall do no murder"...as far as ethnic cleansing, please read... 1 Samuel, Chapter 15... God orders Saul to kill King Agag and everything and everyone... read it... it will help with this.... Remember, "we" are His creation... His ways are not our ways.... His thoughts are not our thoughts. Then too...because of disobedience... God caused the Earth to open up and swallow up thousands... God flooded the Earth and killed'um all...but His chosen... It's not good to fall into the hands of an angry God... but "we" are the ones that bring on His wrath by our disobedience....
