my brother has used the family over and over again. He's now been sober for 3 months and is claiming kidney failure, that his red blood count and his white blood count cannot be detected on his labs. He's also saying that the other organs in his body are shutting down, yet the doctor has him on NO medications other than vitamins and an anti-siezure medication and he has to turn in at 10 applications a week to stay on his state funded insurance. I'm a medic, so I don't think I'm that dumb, but if he's in as bad of shape as he claims, wouldn't he be hospitilized?

It sounds like your brother may be bipolar due to the medication that they've selected, and that he has a history of substance abuse.
Some anti-seizure medications levels and blood serums have to be monitored closely, as they MAY cause organ damage. However, if that was the case, they would not have them on such medication. And yes, he'd be hospitalized if his organs were shutting down.
It sounds to me like your brother is seeking attention, which is to be expected of someone that is as unstable as he must be right now. He will need a lot of support in order to make it through these tough times, because the alternative is to try to numb himself again with substance abuse.
Please seek a support group, and see if there's any way you can visit with his doctor, or accompany him on a visit. His doctor can probably suggest several support groups (they probably have some there at the same clinic) that are good in your area.

Blood cell counts have fairly high accuracy and precision, so If you had undetectable red and white blood cell counts that would mean that you had virtually no blood cells (other than platelets). You would die long before you ever reached this condition, so that claim cannot possibly be true.
I would guess that your brother has some type of problem that is causing him to either intentionally exaggerate mild medical problems, or to truly believe he has problems that don't exist. Your brother may not have the problems he suggests, but he may have a psychiatric problem that is just as serious as some of the claims he is making.

If he had no red blood cell count he would be dead. Red blood cells transport oxygen and nutrients to cells and carry away waste. Without red blood cells, cells starve and the body becomes toxic. He would require daily dialysis or death would occur. As for white blood cell count those would indicate an issue with his immune system but would not be life threatening until he becomes sick with a bacteria or virus. Best way to make sure is to accompany your brother to his next doctors appointment so you can asses his condition and determine how best to assist your brother.

If you are interested in helping him, ask him to give permission to chat with his doctor. If you just want to convince yourself that he is lying (which is a symptom of later stages of alcoholism), ask to see his lab work. Blood cell count are some of the easiest things to see in lab reports. You probably know that, already.
It seems like skepticism is justified.

He would at minimum be seeing a doctor very regularly. Would most likely have had to go to ER or to the hospital for the tests that say he has this. He would certainly be on other meds and most likely dialysis. I think he's scamming you.

he very well could be in horrible shape and has decided not to take drastic measures to prolong a very painful life. I hope that he is making amends to everyone he hurt and that he is able to leave life peacefully and all of your family members find peace with the situation

yeah I would say so...if someones organs were 'failing' they would be in the hospital imediately...for precautionary reasons...
