I'm just wondering if it's different and longer/shorter than a christian/catholic ceremony. I have to take my daughter, so I would like to know how long she has to be patient! Thanks.

Well, most of the time the LDS have what is called a "family prayer" before the funeral, where a prayer is offered and the casket closed.
I think it just depends on what the family wants and maybe what the individual wanted... most of the LDS funerals I have been to last about an hour.

mr. penguin, you are incorrect, sorry. Any person attending the funeral viewing is allowed to see the temple clothing, most like you, will not understand what they are, but that doesn't matter because they don't mean anything to you anyways.

Mormon Funeral

Yes, it is about an hour. The viewing, if any is usually before in a separate room. It is usually for family and select guests. No one checks for a temple recommend or membership, so non members may view temple clothing. This includes a green apron. There may be a separate graveside service of about 30 minutes that includes a prayer and dedication of the grave.

Okay, for the other person who answered this question, Temple clothes are not green. Everything we wear in the Temple is pure white. To answer the question, Mormon funerals last on an average of about an hour.

There's usually a viewing, a meeting (maybe an hour...depending on what the family plans) and the graveside service. Some will have a meal afterwards for family and close friends.

I'm guessing you'll be attending the viewing and the meeting.

It's no longer than any other funeral. If it's a true LDS funeral, it will be more positive than most other funerals. At least, the ones I've been to are.

Plus, most Mormons are used to young kids in their services, as we don't have nursery for little kids, they all come with their parents. So, our meetings aren't as quiet or solome as other church's.

I would also say about an hour. Generally they are a little lighter and shorter than a Catholic funeral.

As long as it takes to unclothe the corpse and place mormon ritual white and green temple clothes on it. Very curious to say the least.

I'd say that from start to finish, it'll last about 45 minutes to an hour and a half, plus about 20-30 minutes for the car train and burial.

EDIT: So as not to be misunderstood, they don't have the guests watch while they do it; it is done before people arrive. Sometimes they won't let anyone but temple mormons attend the viewing for fear that a 'profane' might see their happy temple clothes.

RE-EDIT: Thank you, Isolde, for confirming that part of the temple clothing is green. It's difficult to understand how some temple-going mormons can so easily forget the color of some of their clothes. Maybe they don't attend their temple as often as I do.

About an hour for the funeral, and then for the graveside service with just close friends & family, maybe another half hour.
