Do you have young, male cats? If so, they may be spraying. They will do that to mark territory if you don't have them neutered. I think it's too late to stop them once they start doing it , although I'm not positive about that.

If you have more than 2 cats, then you should have more than one litter box. Also, try using clay litter in a box without a lid and no moving parts.

If this isn't the problem then make sure your cats are spayed or neutered.

If they are spayed or neutered, then try placing more litter boxes around the house for a while. You may have a territorial issue going on between your cats in which you will need to give the territorial cat a lot more loving attention so that your cat wants to do what is right out of love. They're like us in that they want to feel loved - and they're a lot like children who rebel and start behaving naughty when no one pays attention to them. Love! It's the best you can give.

There are a few reasons why your cat would do this the most obvious is a dirty litter box but more than likely it is a bladder infection. You cat associates the litter box with the pain from urinating and chooses to go elsewhere to avoid that pain. That is why he is going in many different places. You should take him to the vet before it gets worse and develops into a kidney infection. Unless your cat is an unneutered male and he is spraying everything.

Have they had a check-up yet? Usually a sudden change in litter box habits is the first sign that something is awry.

Has there been a change in their food, either the brand or the formula?

Has there been an accident recently near their litter box, perhaps?

Good luck!

Take them to the vet and see if there are bladder infections. For the mean while you might want to keep them in a bathroom or another room that is contained and has a easily cleanable floor.
