Vinegar and baking soda.
Can be messy, but it will work.
If you want more power use mentos and Diet coke.

A few more design parameters would be handy. How far does the car have to travel and under what conditions? Does speed matter?

Look for things around the house that can store energy and then release it in a controllable manner - pen springs, weights, mouse traps, elastic materials. For real fun, you might consider a less controllable energy release such as the famed Diet Coke and Mento energy source.

Design a method to convey the stored energy to a drive mechanism. A string wrapped around an axle or airflow through a nozzle would be examples.

Finally, design something that can carry the power source and the drive mechanism. Try to keep the total weight low.

I think I had a project like this at school. I used mousetraps, spools of thread, and rubberbands. Other stuff could be used too if they are going for looks like extra cardboard. Household items could almost be anything. I know there are some liquid compounds that cause reaction/explosions....Like they have those pop bottle bombs and volcano eruption stuff (baking powder and vinegar). I hope some of them help. Good luck!!

You could try using a balloon. Let the air flow out of the balloon through a converging diverging nozzle to get more thrust.

Self Powered??? That will be a first, you could use Solar power, but that comes from the sun or strong light. Dont think we have built anything that is self powered yet, well maybe nuclear plants.
