Canberra has a very good educational program. Kids start preschool when they're just 4yrs old, and go till 18yrs old which is provided free if you use the public system. The Uni's there are also some of the best in the country. Work wise, Canberra always has vacancies in Government offices, and the building industry is also quite good. Its a nice city for families, about 345,000 people, easy to get around and pretty safe.

Queensland and New South Wales kids start school when they're 5 and go through to 18yrs on the public system. They're both really big states, so depending what suburb you're in, will depend on the quality of the school, and they types of Uni's available.
NSW always has lots of work, in any field, depending on the area and what you're looking for. Sydney city (8 million people) is not really good for young kids because its so busy and some ares have a high crime rate. Country NSW always needs doctors, farm hands and teachers.
Qld traditionally has always been harder to get work, simply because everybody wants to live there since the weather is so good. But tourism and hospitality along the east coast from Coolangatta right up to Cairns, always have positions vacant. The Gold Coast can be difficult for family life simply because there are so many tourists. Its nicer to go a little out of the centre & into the suburbs, or further north to Brisbane, these areas are good for jobs in construction.
Melbourne is a nice place, but similar to Sydney its much better out in the suburbs.

The education system in Australia is run by the States rather than the federal government but all are of a high standard. Australian universities range from good to excellent. All Australian academic qualifications are accepted overseas. The only schools that do not offer an adequate education if you want to do tertiary education are the Christian schools where the science standards are very low.

Sydney is the largest city with a population of about 5 million people (not 8)and does not, despite what a previous poster said, have a high crime rate. Despite media beat-ups, Sydney's crime rate has fallen every year for the past decade at least and is no higher than that in Perth, Adelaide or Melbourne. It is a safe city to live in as are all Australia's cities. It has some of the best schools and universities in the country. It has, however, the highest median price for housing in the country although Melbourne, Perth and Darwin are catching up rapidly.

As far as jobs are concerned, why not have a look at the classified advertisements in the newspapers on Saturdays? They are all on line. The websites are
Sydney http://www.smh.com.au
Melbourne http://www.theage.com.au
Adelaide http://www.theadvertiser.com.au
Brisbane http://www.couriermail.com.au
Perth http://www.westaustralian.com.au
Hobart http://www.themercury.com.au
Darwin http://www.ntnews.com.au
Canberra's paper is, I think, the Canberra Times which would be http://www.canberratimes.com.au but I am not certain of that one.

I agree with Molly. Perth is currently in a building boom. Houses and shops going up everywhere with a complete lack of tradesmen to keep up. Education all through Australia is great as well. The public system, which my children are in, is amazing and then there are the many private schools available for a price as well. There are many English migrants in the area I live in and they all seem to love it here. Good luck with the move. I think it will be a good one wherever in our wide brown land you choose!
