Bare B is right. Though we can't directly see through our skin just by looking at it, you can tell that it isn't as dense as, say, bone by shining a flashlight underneath your fingers as they are held straight out and close together. You'll see how your hand looks red.

Simple, your eyelids are a thin membrane. The cloth over your eyelids adds more thickness, allowing less light to penetrate.
