My reference explains the principal of a hydraulic jack and gives the relevent formulae. A hydraulic jack is analagous to a lever, in that the ratio of the areas of the two sections is the reciprocal of the ratio of the forces. A hydraulic jack enables a small force to lift a heavy object, but requires a longer path of action.
