There is no "better". What are you interested in? Don't let your decision be driven by starting salaries. Decide based on what you "have to do".
For me it was electrical engineering. I was listening to radio for as long as I can remember. I built my first transmitter in 9th grade. I can't tell you how many TV sets, record players, amplifiers, etc. I have torn apart. Some of them even were successfully put back together. It's just what I do.
Mechanical engineering presents a different challenge. There is a big difference between something that you can imagine and making that same thing manufacturable. Materials science is a world of its own. I work with a lot of mechanical engineers and I can see that there are many interesting and exciting things that they do, but it's not for me.
So look at yourself. What do you find yourself returning to? What did you while your time away with when you were younger and weren't even thinking about jobs? Decide based on what you find interesting, what you enjoy doing.
You have a lot of years ahead of you. Getting stuck in something unrewarding simply because it offered a more attractive salary at first or because someone declared it a good field to be in will leave you with a dead end career. Do what makes you happy.

If you want money go for electrical. If you want knowledge go for mechanical. It depends what motivates you. I am a nuclear engineer with a degree in mechanical engineering. Although I work at a power station, most of the engineers are mechanical. Mechanical engineering will allow you to get in almost any area. Even law or banking!

I'm a mechanical engineer so I'm very biased. The amount of jobs available in ME ranges from automotive, robotics, HVAC, aerospace, manufacturing, etc. I like to be able to physically see what I design. If I was an electrical engineer I don't think I'd get much satisfaction in that. Plus, there are a lot more Asians in EE ruining the curve. And in the end, all engineers probably make the same amount of money roughly, while EE's do tend to stat off more.

I'll go with electrical but I'm an electrical engineer, so I'm prejudiced that way.
Electrical engineers make more money than mechanical engineers and there are more specialites (sub-categories) of electrical engineering than mechanical.
