I asked an earlier question about the Canon Rebel XTi, and many said that it did not have spot metering. What is this?

A spot meter takes a reading of the light from a small area of the frame in your camera.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (aka 400D) does not have spot metering.

Spot metering helps to autofocus the subject in the middle of the frame, usually taking about 1 to 5% of the viewfinder area, or where the AF point is set. This is very helpful when you are autofocusing an object with an intense backlight (for example, a portrait with a very bright sun in the background), as the spot metering meters the face, thus correcting every level of exposure and contrast in regards with the total frame. This way, the face doesn't look underexposed in the resulting picture.
