a reputable breeder should have papers proving it's lineage as purebred. If not ask to see it's parents, if not available, just look at the markings to give you a rough idea. Rottweiler's have tan markings just above brows, under part of muzzle, on the chest between the legs, and from about the knee down on the fronts of their legs. Log online, find a site w/ purebred rottweiler pics, print if you can, and take it w/ you also.

And to Lisa P, why does it matter to you where he gets or how much he pays for said dog? As long as he shelters, protects, trains, and provides for this dog, that's all that matters.

Go to a reputable breeder. Seriously, this is the only way to ensure that you get a good dog. You are asking for trouble, especially with a breed like a rotti, if you don't. We made that mistake _once_ and our "purebred" had severe behavior problems, I think bordering on mental illness/defect, which we had to deal with for years. It is no fun to worry how your dog will act around others, or worse, even your own family/kids. Remember, it's a lifelong commitment so make sure you get a quality dog. The saying, "you get what you pay for" is so true with animals... Rotti's are great, intelligent dogs, but make sure you get a good one!

You made a good choice to get a Rottweiler. A pure bread rottie should be black with rust to mahogany markings. They should have meium lengh, straight, coarse hair. Other than that I'm not sure just make sure the breeder has documentation on both of the parents. You can ask for the registration numbers to check for your self.

when you go to see the pup you wish to buy ask to see both the mother and father, and if there are any papers proving it's a pure bread, we got some for my shizhu but I'm not sure if they are required for an official pure bread or not, also google image pictured of pure bread rottie puppies, and compare the physical features of the images to the ones of the pups you are looking at, it's really the best way I think, aside from looking at the parents

Unless you go to a responsible breeder or to a Rottweiler rescue you can't be sure you are getting a purebred.

You can't tell by color, markings or hair length... there are several breeds with these same markings and coat length and there are many, many mixes with the same markings, color and coat length.

Ask to see both the parents. Also there are sites online for specific breeds of dogs too. Try one of those. They usually have purebred dogs on there. Good Luck!

Why does it matter----a mixed breed dog is fair better than a purebred. Don;t worry if its mixed, it will still be a wonderful pet.

Stop supporting backyard breeders. I you can't afford a quality pure breed dog from a reputable breeder then get one from the pound.

It's a living thing, you shouldn't be looking for a "deal"!

You will only be able to tell if they are papered.
