Continental deserves a huge lawsuit thrown at them over this one. They were right to reimburse the girl and her teacher for the plane ticket and the hotel, but they should also have to pay punitive damages and the pilot should be fired.
I can see kicking a person off the plane for being sick when they have a home they can turn around and go to. But she was returning home. That pilot left her stranded. If anyone doesn't know what that feels like, then I'm envious. It's the worst feeling in the world and for a sick child, it's even worse.
To add insult to injury, there was a doctor on the plane that said the girl was okay to travel and the pilot still booted her off. If he was worried about her being contagious, there is a neat little invention called a mask. Surgeons wear them. So do people who don't want to risk infection or pass possible infection on to others. They cost a few dollars.
On a personal note, this is yet another reason I don't fly anymore. Everyone's too scared of something. First they're making mothers drink their own breast milk from their babies bottles (have to make sure it's not a liquid explosive), then it's shooting mentally ill people with a phobia of flying, and now they're leaving sick children stranded in an unfamiliar city. I'd hate to see how they'd treat me--I've got asthma with an extreme allergy to perfume. The moment they sit me down close to someone wearing too much perfume (and there's always one!), I'd get booted off the flight. Wouldn't want to risk everyone catching my allergies, you know. Foolish.

Continental is the worst airline in the United States. It is the only airline I will not fly on.
Believe me I have had some miserable trips including having been shoved in the back of a small plane flying passengers and cargo and having to fly in the cockpit with the pilot because I was the lowest person on the totem pole on that flight.
We need an airline passengers bill of rights and Continental needs to compensate this teenager for missing the trip of a life time because the crew didn't want her around.
Coughing can be caused by anything including, and probably, having breathed in something like a fly while she was napping. A doctor examined her and found her fit to fly right there on the plane.

This is the first I've heard of this, but I agree with soccer. And I also agree with the other guy that it must have been major, and that you shouldn't be flying when you have something. If this cough sounded like strep throat, or something that could be harmful to the remaining 50-100 or whatever passengers on that plane, it's Continentals job to grant those passengers the right of not having to sit on a plane of someone who could get them extremely sick. Especially think about any old people in the front. If they were to catch something, it could be possibly even DEADLY for them. I think that what was necessary was for them to refund what they paid for their flight, and pay for the night of hotel stay. And possibly some NyQuil or something. lol.
Sadly enough, in this country, a lawsuit would probobly win if they were to resort to that. I think that she had a right to be on the plane, but so did the others. And the others did not have the right to be sick, and she shouldn't either. Therefore she should've been booted. Continental did the right thing, and I'm glad that they care for the rest of the passengers on the flight. That's almost litterally "risking everything" to make sure your passengers stay healthy. I definitly have a new respect for Continental. I've never flown on them.
Thanks

I think it must have been a fairly extreme coughing fit for an airline to remove a passenger. You're not supposed to travel when you're contagious--with anything. If any airline employee--from skycap, to check-in, to gate agent, to flight attendant, pilot, purser, (butcher baker candlestick maker...) noticed clear signs of acute respiratory illness, and if more passengers were to come down ill with the same thing during or soon after the flight, who do you think everyone would point the finger at, then? Hmm?

I hink that yes, they should have paid for her hotel and since they didn't want to take the time to get their luggage off the plane then they should reimburse for additional expenses.
