we have noitced his eye has been watering for some time and producing gunk occasionally. I have just noticed what I think is a dog hair stuck across his eyeball which moves around quite a lot. Does this need surgery to remove do you think?

Take him straight to the doctors. Get it removed professionally and surgically by a doctor. Dont try to remove it yourself you may cause damage or inflamation.

Are you seriously going to trust your 5 month olds eyes to people on the internet? Get off your computer, get on the phone and call an ophthalmologist for an appointment immediately. Eye infections can escalate quickly and can permanently damage your vision. DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE, TWEEZE OR RINSE THIS YOURSELF! If it's not a dog hair, your child may have a blocked tear duct. This needs to be professionally evaluated before scarring occurs.

You can rinse it out with luke warm water, use something to squirt water gently. Once its in a area that is workable use a tissue folded and gently brush the dog hair to the corner of the eye by the nose. Use tweezers to remove from there. If this doesn't work then take him to a doctor.

If you don't want to rush him to the doctors, I read somewhere that a safe way to remove a foreign object from the eye is to have another person lick the eye ball. I don't know if this can be recommended completely, but I can't see it doing any harm and is better than poking him with fingers or tweezers.

Buy an eye bath from the chemist. Use sterile water. Or use an eye wash (the type you find in first aid kits (its just sterile water in a bottle).

Good luck

Get a bottle of sterile eye wash from the drug store and wash his eye out. He might complain about this, but it won't hurt him....squirt some in your own eye to see that it's not in the slightest bit painful....

If you can't get it out, go to the doc...they'll basically do the same thing...wash it out with eye was to rinse the hair out. Surgery won't be necessary, though.

try using milk its not as painful as using water its soothing but if it doesnt come straight out take him to a clinic to have someone remove it. if it has been watering for sometime i dont think its going to come out on its own if the milk doesnt work see a doctor straight away your eyes are very precious.
