Good thing he was not articulate enough to really tell you what he thinks.
If you lied, you lied. You need to apologize and try to find a way to earn trust. Sometimes it is not possible, sometimes it is but it can take forever. If this friendship means anything to you, all you can do is say you are sorry, try to understand fully the impact of your lies and see what you can do about earning trust back.
