It's a dominance thing, not a mating thing. One is asserting dominance over the other. It's natural.

I believe this is a sign of one animal wanting dominance over the other. (The one that mounts is the one that wants to be dominant)

However, I saw something on animal network where Caesar, a dog trainer specialist, was introducing a male dog to a female dog. He was hoping they would be friends. After a very short while, with the dogs sniffing each other, the male mounted the female. Both the dogs were "fixed" and unable to really "mate". Then after another minute or 2, the female mounted the male dog. Caesar said this was good, and it meant that they were going to be friends.???

I suppose the fact that they both mounted (and allowed each other to mount) showed that they were going to get along, without one always being dominant over the other. This is a deduction I made...

It is the way the "Alpha" dog shows dominance over the other dog. You may also see her mounting stuffed animals, it is very common. Every female dachsund I have ever had has done this to other animals, and the larger stuffed animals. You just have a very domineering dog. Sorry, she wants everyone to know she is the top dog. Mine seem to do this more often when company is around, I think they just want everyone to know that they are number 1.

Yes. Its a dominance thing. The one doing the mounting is asserting her position as the dominant dog between the two.

Yeah, it's natural. It's a dominance thing.
Plus if your dogs go into "season", it's an instinct really...they just want "it" so bad!!
A female I used to have (she's passed) used to mount pillows! Yeah, pillows!
When she was younger, even older, she loved laying on pillows. Then she REALLY loved LAYING on pillows. We had to take them away from her it got so bad.
Once in a while we'd throw her one as long as she didn't do "naughty's" to it!!
Your dogs are just fine. Better to see a dog with a dog, rather than a dog (that's obviously confused) with a pillow!!

Yep! My spayed female mini doxie mounts my 2 spayed female cats all the time. Like someone else said, it's a dominance thing.

Yes, the one mounting is showing dominance over the other. All dogs do it - they are establishing a pecking order.

I think it's normal. I used to have a friend whose female dog liked to hump a large toy airplane across the yard and back, which seemed pretty weird. But yeah, I think females do that.

Yep, completely a dominance thing. Bitches are.... well bitches. Sometimes a female dog will mount a male as well, same reason.

yes... it is a sign of dominance... I also have two females and a neutered male... they hump like crazy sometimes... I just sit back and laugh at them....The little boy just doesn't really know what he is doing... He tries to hump their heads! lol... but don't worry about your dogs... they are not gay... or anything else... they are just playing the "I am bigger and better than you" game....
