Other than checking your credit report, how do you find out if any creditor is attempting to sue you to get judgement against you? I know that debt collectors can try to sue you without notifying you.

Go to your county clerks office. They can search by name and ssn. If they are attempting to sue you, you'll just have to wait until you are served with a summons. If you do not respond to the summons within the alloted time, they will be awarded a default judgement.

In order to get a judgment on you, they would have to serve you with a copy of the Complaint and Summons. However, they can do what is called "Service by Publication." That is where they publish an article with a description of the case and the place where the complaint was filed. I would look into your local municipal court and clerk of courts (common pleas). They must serve you at your last known address. You might also want to check your local newspaper.

even though you aren't notified by the collectors, the court where they file the lawsuit will need to notify you so you can have a chance to appear in court.
