It's easy to make, full of electrolytes and easy to eat. Plus it tastes good, but No there in no therapeutic reason for it.

Jello is a great way to get more fluids and protein into the patient, and it is always included in a clear liquid diet. Clears are typically given to patients after esophageal, gastric, and/or intestinal surgery (sometimes there are other indications).
Contrary to popular belief, it is dangerous to give jello to patients who have oropharyngal dysphagia, as it becomes liquid prior to swallowing and will result in aspiration. I spent YEARS explaining this to doctors who didn't know better.

Light and easy for staff.
Sweetness ensures energy yield.
But it is also easy on the patient's digestion, is not a heavy food, cost effective for the hospital as most is water.
As the body needs any energy it can retain simply for it to concentrate on healing and recovery, such foods which are very easy to digest are ideal.
This is why when you are sick, you don't feel like eating much.

jello qualifies as a liquid, so when you're trying to advance a patient's diet slowly and you don't want to give them solid food yet, you can still give them jello and give them the illusion that they're actually eating solid food.

I think it is easier to swallow. Liquid foods are good to eat after a surgery..very palatable. Food is usually hard to eat after a surgery because of all the meds they put you on.
