It all depends on the hospital. My mom is a nurse. Some hospitals have icky food, and some have great food. The one she works at now has food so good that people who don't even work there and aren't even patients there come to eat in the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch. Employees of close businesses are frequent customers.

Yes, had crab cakes the last time I went to the hospital. This was in Memorial Sloane Kettering in NYC. They had a menu that was like going to an upscale restaurant.

I would have prefered to not need the surgery and never had the chance to sample the food.

After the births of my two children, I was digging the turkey sandwiches they had in the maternity ward pantry!! The turkey wasn't cheap, processed deli meat--this was actually a real turkey breast that had been sliced, nice soft white bread, mayo (NOT Miracle Whip!), some nice crunchy lettuce, and a little salt. I swear I ate three or four of those things per day while I was there. They had me circle my menu choices from the kitchen, but I refused, telling them I'd have the turkey from the pantry. :D

I can relate. I am allergic to wheat, soy, eggs, dairy, tomato, avacado, etc. The only thing they could give me during my lengthy stay was iceburg lettuce and plain steamed rice-and I still had reactions. Hospital food, like school food, is loaded with preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, chemicals, trans fats, and all other sorts of unhealthy garbage. Its the hospitals way of getting you to have a repeat visit. The food industry sucks. Iceburg lettuce and steamed rice for a month is no fun.

No very horrible food! And you'd think for the price you are paying to stay in the hospital they'd fork out some decent food! Jeez! School cafeteria food has a better selection! Sad to say!

Maybe I'm weird but I loved the food when I was in hospital, couldn't get enough of it!!! I've moved abroad now, the hospital where I live doesn't even provide food, it doesn't even provide 24 hour care so a relative had to come in and look after you in the night!!! I miss you NHS!!!!!!

Thankfully, my only admissions were for childbirth, which doesn't really count, as I wasn't sick. I always remember getting a dinner on one day, and the meat was grey, and totally unidentifiable by either taste, texure or colour - it was a mystery that's still unsolved!
I didn't attempt to eat dinner in hospital - the nearby takeaways were much more preferable.

H. Lee Moffit Cancer Center and Hospital in Tampa Florida has the best hospital food ever...I mean I wouldn't want another 'reservation' there but it was excellent.

Ours had awesome breakfast food, and the rest of the day was crap. The blueberry muffins had that crunch sugary muffin top, mmmmm. It was after baby, and I even got in trouble for ordering to many for my husband.
