there is only one name which is common to both and that is of Joseph the carpenter, and he should never have been mentioned since he was never responsible for the conception of Jesus

In one Jesus was the son of David and in the other the son of joseph...

Thats how each start off. I think the whole mary thing is just your way of glossing over a mistake

While they do appear to contradict each other in the eyes of scholars and non-believers, Christians have no problem reconciling that both are right and that both Joseph AND Mary were of the bloodline of David (remember, marrying your cousins is OK).

One follows his family tree through his mother, the other through Joseph. If you followed your family tree through your mom and then your dad, they would be different but would end at the same person - you.

The one that does it through Mary is for the Jews, who followed family lines through the mother. Even today, if the mother is Jewish, the child is considered Jewish.

The one that does it through Joseph was, if I recall right, for the Greeks and Romans (the Gentiles) who followed lines through the fathers. It was to show that Jesus fullfilled the prophesy of being of David's line, through both Mary and Joseph.

in that time the family of the father, the male was the family that was listed in the genealogy of birth. It is simply Jewish custom to do so. Nothing else, just custom.
