And, why do churches have so many potluck dinners and meals as part of their social networking...isn't this just enticing/tempting people to sin?

O.K., because some are fat, does not necessarily mean they are gluttons...however, the Bible also says your body is the temple of God...so, if you are overweight you are mistreating your body, and thereby committing sin...just as if you smoke, don't exercise...remember the Bible says to keep yourself clean and healthy, in mind and body.

Much of the food that people are indulging in is raised in conditions that are degrading to the planet and its creatures. The widespread use of pesticide and fertilizers on genetically modified seed crop leaches poisens into our water supply and air - many anecdotal links between industrial horticulture chemicals and increased disease rates are around. The conditions for animals in factory farms is more horrific than Dante's imaginitive description of Hell.

Is ignoring God's call to be stewards of the earth a sin? Does this compound the sin of gluttony? Is a fat Christian eating at McDonalds sinning twice?

The gathering together over food is a millenia old tradition.
Yes, gluttony is a sin, but Christians are people, just like everyone else, who suddenly find themselves living in a culture very unlike any before it. This is the first time in history that people have so much leisure and most jobs are sedentary. We have to work hard now not to overeat when for thousands of years people have had to work hard to eat enough. It's going to take a while.

Because Christians are people too. We all sin and come short of the glory of God. That is why we have churches, so sinners can come together and learn about Christ and worship God. The dinners and meals are to fellowship with other Christians. Spending time with people of faith who believe as you do makes it a little easier to live a Christian life. Christ shared meals with others and he didn't condemn the sinner, just the sin.

Calling yourself a Christian does not mean you are immune to sin. And you make an assumption that obese people are gluttons, which is not necessarily true either. As for the part about pot-luck suppers, that's just silly. Communal eating is fundamental to human society. It does not tempt people to "sin".

Gluttony is basically a sin of over-indulging yourself in something that's not either sex or money (Sex wud now make it Lust and money wud now make it Greed). It doesn't neccessarily mean food (it could also be overworking, overeating, watching too much tv or mostly anything that's too much for your health.) If a person loves to eat (and is fat) it doesn't neccessarily mean their sinful. Just as long as they share what they have. And wid concerns to Christians having feasts? You shud knw dat even Jesus Christ loved to go to these things. (Read about d Wedding of Cana.)

All Christians fall short of perfect behavior in one aspect or another. We are called to be generous, so I suppose that the excess food we/I eat should have gone to the poor.

On the other hand, God provides a guideline of tithing. It is ok to be successful and wealthy. You can always do more, which could become a treadmill. God is satisfied with 10%.

some people are over weight because of health problems. Some medications taken for depression can cause you to gain weight and so can birth control. I had a herniated disk 5 years ago and had to take steroids for it... this caused me to be hungry all the time and I gained weight. Diabetes can cause you to be overweight not to mention genetics. There are many contributing factors for obesity... not just over eating.

gluttony is a sin in terms of overindulgence, having too muxh sex or addiction to drugs is gluttony in that form.

obesity nowadays can be caused by other things than overeating, its foolish to assume every fat person in the world is fat because they like to eat more.

and if they do call themselves christians and you see it as a sin, then why did god make them that way?

Because they justify it by "being fruitful and multiplying." You should know by now that Christians can justify doing anything by twisting a carefully selected bible verse and passing it off as the word of God.

Obesity is not a sin and can be caused by many factors, not only over-eating.

Gluttony is over-indulgence, and just because they have dinner doesn't mean you have to stuff yourself to the point of being miserable. *duh*
