Good question. When a person is born again in Christ it is a spiritual thing. The soul(the part of man that lives after death) is ransomed by what Christ did on the cross. (Corinthians 5:21; Romans 5:8) He paid our debt to God for our sin & God wipes the slate clean & gives us a ticket to heaven by adoption into the family of God. (John 1:12) This relationship and standing with God never is reversed once obtained. (John 10:27-29; John 5:24; I John 5:13) Like I said, this is all in the spiritual part of man. While we are still alive on this earth, we live in a earthly body. That part is not eternal and will die and decay one day. We still have a free will (given to us by God) and can disobey Him (sin) anytime we have the urge to....it is a choice. Now, if we are reborn, the Holy Spirit (God's own Spirit) lives in us (Ephesians 1:13) and gives a distinct nudge on our conscience and our heart whenever we sin. Again, we have a choice to repent and ask forgiveness & make amends to anyone we wronged....OR....we can carry that sin to heaven with us, unforgiven & uncleansed. Now, here's the part people often get confused about. There will be what the Bible calls the Last Judgement (Matthew 25:31,32; Jude14,15)....at this judgement it is determined whether or not you have rejected or received the Holy Spirit when He came to you with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Rec'd...you were reborn,headed to heaven. Rejected...you go to hell...forever. (Romans 6:23) This judgement is specifically to determine where your soul will be in eternity. Sometimes, we don't make clear that there are other judgements even in heaven. Unconfessed sins will be judged when God looks at how we lived as Christians, and rewards our good deeds but subtracts rewards for our evil deeds. (Romans 5:10; IICorinthians 5:10) So, to answer your question...No, you are not automatically forgiven for a sin you haven't confessed & asked God for foregiveness, but, at the same time you do not go to hell because of it if you are a Christian. The sin to watch out for that God will not forgive is rejecting the Holy Spirit when He comes to you with the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29) That will send you to hell.

The day that all religious people (I mean people who believe in god, alright, this is the reason atheists do not want atheism considered as a religion) stop committing crime, I will consider that there is a god.
OK. Christians, straighten up your people, I am giving you a chance. Stick to your ten commandments (maybe there's more than ten by now: like double-dipped your chip. Funny!), sort out those false believers of your god, and remember it's either all Christians are good or no deal.

If you are a follower of Christ, you don't go out and commit crimes my friend ... at least not knowingly lol.
If you didn't know you were committing a crime (like you double-dipped your chip at a party and didn't realize it) I think God is large enough to see the big picture here lol

I think if we go to the rule book, true repentance is required. Therefore if Mother Theresa stubbed her toe and accidentally cursed right before her heart stopped, she would be doomed.....

or whatever
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.
14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifices of God are [c] a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

Apparently all you have to do is say "sorry God" just before you die and all will be forgiven.
Or at least that's what the catholic church taught me.
