Hey guys,
My girlfriends and I will be driving to Byron from Brisbane. Is the Pacific Motorway the only way or are there coastal roads that we could take? Thanks!

There are local roads closer to the coast than the freeway but they are no real advantage and will take a lot longer as you will have to contend with traffic and traffic lights. You won't see much more than you will on the freeway unless you stop and take a look. You can turn left off the freeway and head for the Gold Coast then follow the signs south to Coolangatta. You rejoin the freeway traffic at Tugun.

Going south from Coolangatta, the new freeway is closer to the coast than the old highway. It is probably the prettiest freeway in the country (while Brisbane to Coolangatta is the ugliest). The old highway is still there if you want to use it. Turn off to Murwillumbah and follow it south. It runs through the ranges and has very little traffic these days. The two roads meet just north of Billinudgel and then it is one road to Byron Bay from there.

You could also take Tweed Coast Rd. Exit off the highway just after you go through Tweed Heads taking the Cudgen Kingscliff Chinderah exit (the second one after the bridge) you'll see a sign which says Ballina Right lanes only just before the exit. You can follow the Tweed Coast Road all the way through Casuarina, Cabarita Beach, Hastings Point, Pottsville, etc all the way down to Byron. It's the old road so theres very few petrol stops so make sure you have plenty of petrol in your car before you head that way!!!
