Inattention to the task at hand. Talking on the phone, painting nails, shaving, reading, eating, drinking, smoking, etc. takes up space in a driver's mind, and leaves no room for calculation when something unexpected happens.

Despite having GPS, ABS, ASC, traction control, automatic transmissions, run-flat tires, cruise control, in-car theater, On-Star, AAA, all-wheel drive, independent suspension, infrared cameras, laser distance finders, turning headlights and even self-parking systems, CARS STILL DO NOT DRIVE THEMSELVES. It still takes constant input from a skilled operator to do so.

In Texas several years ago thee DMV did a study to find out what caused traffic jams. the main cause cited was believe it or not , slow drivers. Seems that someone moving slower than the normal flow of traffic would cause the other drivers to slow down to see why the other was moving so slow. From there it was a chain reaction.
I have also noticed many women nowadays are too busy talking on cellphones and are distracted. Men do it too but women are the ones that will be in the fast lane going way too slow and not concentrating on what is actually going on.
If I get a call I pull over to talk. Way too dangerous

In the rain I always see a woman of of the road. When you ask them what happened they usually say something like.....I dunno.....It just got jerky and went off the road. Oblivious to the fact that they were going to fast and the car hydroplaned.

In all honest 95% of the drivers on the road do not know what their car will do when making high speed evasive maneuvers.

Once upon a time a biker went down in a curve. He was sliding in his own lane and would have been beat up but survived the ordeal.
But a woman driving a mini van in the opposite direction of the crash saw the accident and got scared. She slammed on her brakes which caused her to lose steering and skid into the other lane........killing the motorcycle driver.

Had this woman practiced hard braking, she would have known that her van did not have anti-lock brakes. She would have learned that if you slam the brakes without anitlock.......you loose steering.

Every time I pass by the spot where that guy died, I think about the clueless woman who ran him over.

Our driving tests in America are jokes. They should be teaching high speed evasive maneuvers. If you have never slid your car or locked up the brakes, then when something bad happens you are not going to react right.

Had the driving test included a hands on driving course, with emergency braking and high speed control........there would be far fewer accidents

Speed and slow drivers. Accidents caused by slow drivers are a bit less likely to be fatal.

We women are the best drivers of all - why do you think our insurance rates are so low??

Lack of concentration causes most accidents. However, when people drive way below the speed limit, I believe that this can be more dangerous, as all the other drivers just want to overtake to get past them.

I know this as I drive to work on a 60MPH limit road and when there is someone doing 35-40, everyone overtakes in places they shouldn't! But frustration drives you to it.

I would love to see two types of road, one for people that like to drive at the limit and one for people who like to drive well below the limit, then see which road has the more accidents!

me n my mate witnessed an accident monday, it was a woman, she was looking forward, dont think she even saw the car waiting to turn right in front of her, which by the way was another woman, who was indicating, she just slammed into the back of it, hell of a bang!!!! Looked like both cars were written off. By the way, did you know that men outnumber women drivers 7-1 so they (men) are seven times more likely to have an accident than women. My wife only knows three speeds when driving, fast....faster and good morning judge!!!!!

Neither, it's rare for driving too slowly to be the cause of an accident and any insurance company can confirm that women are safer drivers than men. It's a fact, come to terms with it.

statistically, woman have less accidents than men. speed is a factor. if you get someone driving too fast they greatly reduce their stopping distances. most accidents are in urban areas where people ignore speed limits. motorways are safer. only 3% of all accidents happen on motorways. also distracted drivers are often the cause of accidents, ie on mobile phone, trying to change cd's etc. i attended a speed awareness course run by thames valley police and they said speed was the main contributing factor of all road accidents
