Generally No Purebred Rotweilers have short hair and are disqualified for "long hair". I dont have anything to do with the breed but it is possible that there is some sort of genetic mutation the occaaisionally results in long hair or that is a recessive factor from one of the original crossed used to establish the breed that lies dormant in some dogs.
Refer to the standard:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rottweiler/index.cfm
Apart from the possible genetically defective dog.. there are are no long hair versions of the breed.
Excluding a gentic abnormality....your friends Rotty is likely to be cross bred- it may look like one but nonethelss it is only part Rotty. Most crossbreds are easily identifiable as not purebred but a cross back to a purebred makes them much harder to tell. Your friend may have 3 part bred Rotty achieved by crossing purebred to a long haired dog of a similar size and possibly similar colour then breeding one of the long hair ones that looks a lot like a rotty back to purebred and thereby get a realistic looking rotty except for the long hair!.

There is a recessive gene that can cause a longish coat to pop up every now and then in some families. Understand this is NOT a sweep the floor Yorkie coat. Still it is NOT considered desirable (show ring disqualification) as such dogs require more grooming
PS unless the pure relative carries the long coat gene, the fist generation mix of a short hair breed & a long one is short haired!

Im a dog groomer and we have a long haired rotti that comes in for grooming several times a year. By long haired I dont mean like a shih tzu or a poodle, more like a golden retriever type coat with feathers and fluff on his rear end and ears. Very cute!!

I have seen Rottweilers with ruffly or wavy coats where the hair is not as sort or as close to the body. I think the AKC standard is short hair, close to the body- no fluffy or ruffly wavy hair. Like humans, different genes produce different attributes.

You can have a long haired rottwieler, according to the AKC (www.akc.org). It is an immediate disqualification from showing, though.

I have a long haired rottie. Its not uncommon. She is pure bred and not mixed with anything. It is a genetic defect. I have to shave her beard on occassion.
