After reading some of the answers here, I have changed my mind on how to answer this. I guess there are some Islamic countries who are more open to different beliefs and religions, but since I have no personal experience it is hard for me to judge. In the news you only hear bad things, as good news does not sell. I guess ignorance no matter whither your Christian, Muslim, or Jew, exists everywhere in the world, and with ignorance comes prejudice.

The family's maid-servant, a Christian, announced that she was a Muslim. OK. After few months she said she was a Christian. OK. Her job was not affected.
In my country, Govt. funds are earmarked for non Muslims' places of worship, particularly if they had historical, heritage-value. I have myself paid a little donation for the building of a new Church, and a Buddhist temple, following the commandment in the Holy Quran, that, in there God's Name(Allah) is celebrated, and celebrated a lot. In theological Commands, desecration of a Place of Worship, of any religion, is not permitted, even during a War. Such orders of according respect are there in many other religions too. There are mature and sane cultures every where.

FYI,

In Islam there is nothing that says you cannot convert to another religion, in fact the opposite---It says there's no compulsion in religion in the Qur'an. May I point out that many other religions that do not say this in their scriptures.

Shariah law is broad and subjective, most people think that shariah law is indicative of Qur'anic interpretation, but it's not necessarily. Apostates being killed stems back to empirical times when apostasy was associated with treason. Today certain apsects of shariah law are reflective of this because remnants of those empires exist in certain society.

You cannot say killing apostates is reflective of true Islam because it has no basis in true Islamic jurisprudence, rather society's attitude and imam's wishing their own disposition to suit society's agenda.

There are Christians in Africa who kill those who convert to Islam or who aren't Christian, should we therefore blame Christianity or rather those society's intepretations.

Under the interpretation of Islamic Sharia law on which Islamic constitution is based, An apostate faces the death penalty unless he reconverts to Islam. The Prophet Muhammed has said several times that those who convert from Islam should be killed if they refuse to come back.

"Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance, kindness and integrity." Sure it is!

yes...we don't have the right to kill other people, just to guide them. Its upto God...and people who kill or threaten to kill ex-muslims for leaving islam, is in my opinion, no better than the ones who left, because they too are disobeying the laws of God..so, yes they can leave the religion if they choose to..
