When I was a cub/scout I was told that when 2 armies made peace the leaders shook hands with their left hand, htus leaving your right (sword) hand availiable. This was a sign of trust (as the other person could stab you at any point).
I have never heard this said since, was it something my scout troop made up or is it real?

Scouts specifically use a left handshake. Since the right hand is more commonly dominant, the left hand would typically be used in holding a shield; by shaking with the left hand, one is defenseless while trusting the other person who may still be holding a weapon in the right hand.
As this comes from Wikipedia it would appear your scout troop did not make it up - or maybe he wrote it in Wikipedia ;-)

My Scout Master had told me that the reason for a left-hand shake among scouts was that the left hand is closer to the heart. This seemed acceptable to a young mind at that time, and perhaps justified too. However, I haven't checked if this is the correct reason.

No, the left handed handshake and the 'trust' reason were not made up by your troop! The 'left hand handshake' _was_ the Boy Scouts' way. See 'Scouting for Boys' by Baden-Powell.

The Girl Guides do the same. I was told it was because you were supposed to be saluting with your right hand at the same time - nothing about armies.
