Think of it as keys on a piano.
20 Hz being the lowest note on the keyboard & 20,000 Hz or 20 KHz being the highest note on the keyboard.

20 Hz to 20 KHz is the range of human hearing.

So a speaker that has a range of 15 Hz to 50 KHz will be able to reproduce every key on your 20 Hz - 20 KHz keyboard.

A speaker that has a range of 35 Hz to 5 KHz is missing all the keys bellow 35 Hz & every key above 5 KHz on your 20 Hz - 20 KHz keyboard.

The wider the speaker's frequency range is, the better.

With a car speaker you do not have to have the same range of frequencies as your speakers in a hi fi set up .So 35 to 5,000 HZ (used to be known as cycles per second)would be sufficient.Another thing to remember is how flat the frequency range is. A speaker with a range of 35 to 5,000 Hz + or - 3 DB will sound better than one with + or - 10 DB .This speaker will have too many peaks and dips that will change the sound too much.

I hope you have a better understanding of HZ's.

Cheers,Rob.

the human ear can hear between 20 - 20,000

now for that said, most people can't, you can feel lower then 20

also spec's on speakers lie, yes they lie, go listen to the speaker, and listen to another and decide what you like more

buy the way if a speaker can only go up to 5000, it is a midrage speaker and will need a tweeter to go with it, it simply will not produce enouph highs to sound right

20Hz -100Hz is low bass
20,000Hz or 20kHz is very high treble. Although many people can't hear over 15,000Hz
Humans speak between 300 and 3500Hz. Electronic instruments can play the full range.

For a sub-woofer look for a range around 25Hz min-200Hz max.
For a full range speaker 40-18,000Hz
