CO2 is one component of the air that we breathe. Human and animals will consume oxygen and breathe out CO2. On the other hand, plants will consume CO2 and release oxygen. It's a cycle, therefore trees are very important

One carbon atom, atomic number 6, two oxygen atoms, atomic number 8. Molecular arrangement is rather like this O=C=O. the "=" represents two covalent chemical bonds. Average molecular weight is 44, which means it is rather heavier than air.
It currently forms about 0.0385% by volume of ordinary dry air, up from about 0.0300% by volume about 40 years ago. It is a good absorber of long wavelength infrared radiation but is colourless in visible light.
Produced industrially by burning fuels like wood, charcoal, coal and oil and by smelting metals with coke, which is a fairly pure form of carbon derived from coal. Also produced by cars. Natural sources are volcanoes and oxidation of organic material in the soil. It is naturally mixed with some natural gases and also flows to the surface from geological sources, often the metamorphosis of sedimentary rocks to metamorphic rocks.
Exhaled by animals, absorbed by plants and combined with water to produce cellulose and starch, which are long chain sugars or carbohydrates. This process requires energy to run it, the energy is taken from sunlight by plant leaves and stems.
It is also absorbed by some plant-like marine organisms and turned into carbohydrates while others combine it with calcium to produce shells.
When it was discovered about 250 years ago by Prof. Joseph Black in Edinburgh, it was called "fixed air" by some, as it had been found "fixed" in limestone. Interestingly, Prof. Black taught chemistry to James Watt, who improved the steam engine. So global warming is their fault!
