A beta version is software which is still in development, but has all its intended features included. It is usually considered to be a preview or prototype version of the software, made available prior to full release.

Whether it will work with windows vista does not depend on the software's beta status, but on whether the software was developed with windows vista in mind. If in doubt, contact the developer or distributor.

Once upon a time, after development and testing inside an organization was up to certain point, software companies would contact people who were experienced with computers and worked with their previous or similar products and ask them if they wanted to do Beta testing and report problems and errors. Usually as a reward, they got the final published result for free. Beta testing could be easy or hellish, but it served the company by exposing the product to a much wider range of situations and users than in-company testers.
Somewhere along the way, it was decided that putting a product out as a Beta was a way of capturing the attention of ahead-of-the-wave users and possible purchasers. Maybe it was when testing became less messy with better operating systems.
If the company has few bugs or responds quickly to error reports, it can be worthwhile to try. If a company dumps a Beta on an unsuspecting public and runs and hides, then it can be inconvenient or a real mess. Look at Yahoo Answers and the lost avatars among other problems.

Beta means a software is ready for TEST but not Complete.
juat same as when XP and vista was realease originally they where released as Beta's. it lets the consumer/customer test the products rigorously and report back any errors that it may contain, so they can fix any bugs before the full release. its basically a way for for companys to let you test it for free, and not nessasirilly mean it would be like that at final realease. just like Hotmail, they released a Beta version, but was so crap, most peaple who used it, reverted back to original, as it was easier, so Hotmail was scrapped and re-started differently. it's still in beta, but require further work being done.

Hope that answers your Q's
