I went to obedience training with my dog at PetSmart. I loved it ....we ended up going through all the levels. It was so much fun for both me and my puppy. My pup never stopped wagging her tail the entire class every week. I had a great instructor so that can make a difference too. I think it was about $120 for each 8 week session. Obviously, with all the dogs you are not getting as much personal time as you would with a private trainer but it is a great way to socialize your dog. Most importantly it is teaching you..the owner...how to train the dog. You also get homework assignments each week to practice with your dog....I would definitely recommend it. I have a jack russell and every week she was so excited to go and she learned a lot....she just started agility training at another place and I feel that PetSmart was a good place too start. Having basic obedience training will make all the difference in the way your dog behaves and reacts towards other people/dogs. Good luck with your decision.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMSBt

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree with HeartBroken's statement.
---
To the person named Heart Broken who made the first statement:

Caring about your dogs is not just supplying them with physical love. It is knowing that you are supplying them with a well-balanced life, proper attention, veterinary care and proper training.

Example:

Letting your children do whatever they want without enforcing any kind of discipline ultimately hurts them and you.

Yes you may love your children, but if they go out and beat up kids in school, would you really find this acceptable?

The same is true for pets, as they are similar to children in many ways.
----

To the asker:

Caring enough to train your dog, will prevent many problems in the longrun.

Dogs are very social animals, and continously develop new behaviors, so a "perfectly-trained" dog could start to retaliate with just a little bit of improper reinforcement.

Kudos to you!

You are doing the responsible thing by learning about your dog's behavior and how to properly handle any problems that may occur. Part of training will teach you this.

-----
As for the programs between Petco and PETsmart:

- Talk with the people who run the local programs and ask them if they'd be willing to let you watch a demonstration class before signing into the program.

- Get to know the people who are running the program, their experience and how they work.

- Pick a class with someone who is familiar with behavior characteristics, problems and handling/restraint.

- Don't be afraid to ask questions (this is your money we're talking about here)

- Find out what methods they will be teaching.

This will help you choose the best program between the two.

~Hope this helps!

Esther has a point, which will be better will heavly depend on the individual trainer at each place. watching a class is a VERY good idea. Now while these classes a certainly better than nothing, I will mention most of the very best teachers have independent classes. One in my area teaches as part of the counties adult education program - at half the cost as petsmart........

Find a local breed club. Our local club charges $60 for 12 weeks. The dogs are trained by professionals. Petsmart and Petco are RETAIL establishments. They charge $200 and you get second rate training. What to you makes sense about training a dog at a retail store?

Both of these places suck. The instructors are trained to cater to the customers wishes and have no idea how to properly train a dog. They think that treats alone will train a dog. How sad. These are not training classes, they are a joke. Hire someone who knows what they are doing and whose training is based on reward but also corrections and have your dog trained right.

Petsmart has the better program, they have several levels for you and your pup..

i hate it when people give their puppies for training. train him your self, it's the best way cause they feel loved by their boss and at the end of the day the dog is supposed to listen to you--not everyone.
