The correct temperature for your fridge and freezer should be determined according to the usage and load (Items loaded) in both places. So it is difficult to answer your question exatly. However the following may be helpful -

Keeping food cool and at the correct temperature is vitally important especially during the recent heatwave that we are experiencing across England.

Overworked fridge’s and freezers are 40 per cent more likely to break down in the hot summer months.

Proper storage of food is an important part of reducing the risk of food poisoning. Raw foods such as meat and poultry can contain microbes. These can endanger health, especially with semi- thawed food that enables bacterial growth and can cause severe food poisoning.

John Sutton, Electrical Systems Coordinator at The Heart of England Co-operative Society said: “Refrigerators are designed to operate in ambient room temperatures between 50F and 90 F so with the soaring temperatures your fridge needs to be kept in excellent condition.”

John advises that care should be taken when positioning the refrigerator in your home. This is because the hot weather is hitting the 100F mark in some places in the country.

This will ensure that the ambient room temperature falls within the prescribed limits recommended by British standards.

Top Tips from the Heart of England Co-op are:

- Defrost your fridge/freezer regularly and read manufacturer’s instructions.
- Set your fridge/freezer to the correct temperature so that it does not have to work overtime: the optimum temperature for a fridge is between 0-5 degrees centigrade and a freezer at minus 18 degrees centigrade.
- Don’t locate your fridge next to a heat source such as direct sunlight, radiator, or cooker as your fridge may overcompensate.
- Both low and high temperatures can seriously damage food and too low temperatures can be a waste of money.
- Temperatures can vary between day and night as we open fridge doors more during the day, raising the temperature inside. It can take up to half an hour for a fridge to regain its correct temperature, so check how often you leave the door open when you unpack your groceries.

- Should your fridge or freezer stop working, keep the door shut and this should keep the temperature of food down for around 8 hours. -

Officially 2-5C for the fridge and -18C for the freezer BUT old fridges won't achieve that because the insulation around the door generally leaks fridges with internal iceboxes will fail to do that because either the icebox will be too cold or the fridge will be too hot fridges or freezers that don't autodefrost will tend to frost up at those settings, and then the efficiency goes down, the electricity goes up and eventually the temperature goes up as well. very few fridges have good enough temperature distribution to keep the stuff within those narrow limits without creating some excessively cold spots. So chill out. Sniff your food before you eat it.

You're losing money if the fridge is lower than 37-40 degrees or the freezer is lower than 0-5 degrees. To check the temperature, put one thermometer in a class of water at the center of your refrigerator and another between packages in the greezer. Read them after 24 hours.

Here are a couple of tips on a side note:
~cover and wrap food. uncovered foods and liquids release moisture and dirve up electricity costs
~defrost your freezer. frost makes any freezer less efficient and spoils your food faster
~check your refrigerator door seals. close the refrigerator door on a piece of paper that is half in the fridge and half out. if you can remove the paper easily w/o opening the door, you may need to replace the seals or adjust the door latch.

Those "extra" notes could also cause your fridge to have incorrect temperatures. Good luck!

For the fridge it needs to be no warmer than 41 degrees. Your freezer should be 0 to -10. If the fridge is kept any higher, you are running a risk of serious foodborne illness.

There is not a universally correct temperature. Thus you are able to change it. I presume you are looking for the average temperature. Because most people will make assumptions and answer a qustion that was not asked I will refrain.
The the correct temperature is based on the type of food you are storing as well as the quantity.

I see everyone has given values in Fahrenheit. In Celsius, the temperatures should be about 1 to 4 °C and -18°C, respectively.
