Could be anything...

Maybe it's a chigger:

Or maybe it's just a "hot spot"... try some over-the-counter medication for hot spots and see if the area responds..

Maybe it's a patch of sarcoptic mange ... seek a vet..

Maybe the dog is allergic to fleas... seek a vet...

Maybe it's just a dry patch ... massage some lotion into it...

Again.. could be anything.

How do you know it isn't ringworm? If you've been to a vet, presumably they will have some ideas of what it is! Probably some tests will need to be run.

No NOT try over the counter medication until you know what it is - I mean, what's the point? Better to get a diagnosis so you can get the right meds rather than waste time and money on the wrong ones!

It could be a hot spot (localised area of infection), or an allergy, or flea allergic dermatitis, or skin cancer for all we know, we haven't seen it!

While there are some very knowledgeable people on Yahoo Answers:

Unless physically seen by a vet, we cannot diagnose/treat any condition we 'hear' about since it could be many things.

We can make suggestions, but ultimately it's your veterinarian that can provide the best possible care for things of this nature.

With that being said, you should probably ask for a skin scraping analysis when you see your vet.

They'll be able to accurately determine exactly what the problem is and give you the proper medication to help.

If it isn't ringworm it could be infentago (humans can get) They can also lose their hair and get blotches when stressed or/and could be a food allergy. If it doesn't clear up, I would get him checked because there could be something going on internal.
