I feel empathy for atheists - especially the ones like you that say you used to believe in God but now you don't because of reason.
I can only tell you this: Religion is not the answer. But a relationship with Jesus is. He said of Himself that He is the only way to Heaven.
Richard Sigmund died and went to heaven (he was in a car wreck, dead for 8 hours and came back to life in the morgue). He wrote a book "A Place Called Heaven". It may help you with the answers you seek.
Jesus is not a fairy tale because I see the evidence of His work. I have seen people healed of their illnessess in the name of Jesus (not colds mind you, but things like a rebuilt esophagous after a young girl drank liquid drano) and more.
He wants you to join Him in Heaven. Failure to accept Jesus will send you to Hell.
There is a man named Bill Weise who went to Hell. He wrote a book, "23 Minutes in Hell", where he describes what he felt and saw. His testimony can be seen on www.SpiritLessons.com

Some people have a big problem with Athiests, and can't comprehend how they could not believe in God.
I like to believe that I am more open-minded than a lot of Christians. There are several reasons, including the fact that I am dating someone from another Christian denomination. It has really opened my eyes and I can understand peoples' beliefs more. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want to believe.
I am sorry to hear that you lost your faith in God. It happens to a lot of people, especially due to difficult circumstances in their lives when they don't feel a response from God. I have experienced some down times, too, but I was able to maintain my faith. It was very difficult to understand why a supposedly "loving" God would allow those things to happen to me. I leaned a lot on my own understandings, which failed me. I did turn to friends and family, many of whom are believers. They had me read Bible verses such as James 1:2-4:
"(2)Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, (3)because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. (4)Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
Sometimes we have to experience pain, suffering, death, and evil in this world. I believe that even though God may not speak to me, send me a "sign", or make things better at that instant....He works in my life for the good of His people. He builds my strength, courage, and perseverence through my hard times. People around me see that I was able to recovery from the hard times, and through my actions, they are able to see the glory of God.
I hope I was able to convey the information good to you. In conclusion, I understand how you felt abandoned by God. You have every right to walk away and believe in something else. I believe that God is with me, through good times and bad; like the wind, I may not see Him, but I can see his effects.
