Get this book: How to Buy a Diamond by Fred Cuellar. (you can visit his website: http://www.thediamondguy.com/about_dci/meetfred.html)

Buy it on Amazon, Half.com or get it at your local library. But get it. It will tell you everything you need to know about buying a diamond.

When you're done reading it, go to a local jewelry store, preferably one that has their own jeweler on staff. Avoid places like Kay Jewelers and other mall stores. I have found that mom and pop stores tended to have far more knowledgable and helpful staff. The one we bought my ring from was a local chain - grandfather, father and son were all in the business. Their jeweler spent 2 hours with us, showing us color and clarity. He taught us how to use the loupe, brought out their set of diamond colors, and about 6 trays of settings, plus loose diamonds. By the time we left, we were absolutely confident we were getting a good deal from a reputable store.

It's carat, cut, color, and CLARITY not clearity. Just search online for it. Or look under any jeweler's website, they all list the chart.

I thought RobbinsBros.com had a very good site for the layperson to understand the 4C's of diamond buying. We bought my ring at another place, but the website was very informative.

Blue nile has good information. But you will be suprised the places where you can get wedding rings from for excellent prices. My husband go tmine at blue nile, but if you shop around you can get cheaper. Check out costco and walmart, i know it sounds dodgy but they have some REALLY good priced rings. Check it out.....

Most jewellery stores will have a brochure explaining things. You are right to do research first.
