I believe that it is highly possible a draft will be necessary. The two-frontal war we are fighting now has shown how limited our use of manpower has been. National Guard reservists are being over-used for the sake of securing our own borders or helping shore up situations such as natural disasters in certain states. Governors are complaining about a lack of manpower from state reservists. If we have this War on Terror for 20 years as some experts claim, and if we have another domestic terrorist attack, and if we have solid proof of another country's involvement, you can almost guarantee that a draft resolution will be put on the table. If you are drafted, you'll be paid a wage. You will also be given sufficient life insurance, allowances for housing, food allowances, and other benefits to help your family. You will also have free health benefits. I believe your family will, too. They have an allotment system where you can have a certain amount withdrawn from your checks so it can be sent to savings or checking accounts or to pay for certain loans--like for a car, etc. I know a draft doesn't exist now, but don't hold your breath.

There is no draft at the present time. Politically it's not likely that it will be reactivated anytime soon either.
Males are required to register with the Selective Service (draft registration) when they turn 18 to provide a pool of eligibles should there be a need to reactivate the draft. Eligibility for any Federal programs such as most student loans is contingent upon registration with Selective Service.
If the draft were to be reactivated, you would receive the same pay as any other military servicemember. It would be your responsibility to arrange to have money sent home for the support of your wife and children, just as it is the responsibility of those currently serving to do the same.
Wearing glasses is not a bar to military service. A very few career fields are closed to folks with glasses, mostly certain pilot billets such as fighter pilots. Otherwise they'll issue glasses for anyone who needs them.

No draft, you can't get drafted if there is no draft.
If, for some unknown reason in the very distant future, a draft were implemented then you would have to go if you got called up. You would get paid at the normal rate for a soldier of your grade and it would be your responsibility to ensure that money got to your family. This is easily done in today's military with joint checking accounts and direct deposit of pay (which is required in the military). And no, glasses will not prevent you from being drafted. They will even issue you a really sexy pair and give you a set of inserts for your chemical mask. See? They will take care of you !

The money that you would be paid for your duties would go into your checking account that you set up, so it would be up to you to put your wife on that account. Yes you could get drafted and where glasses it's not a big health issue. First thing is that unless your between the age of 18-20 you probably would not get drafted anytime soon!

My only question is why isn't there a draft right now. Everybody was so keen on war a few years ago. Then why don't they go fight it?
I think that every time we want to go to war that males between the ages of 18-35 need to go vote in a referendum for or against the war. If the war is approved those who voted yes threw themselves into the draft system.

Hey there! Excellent question.
I'm currently active duty Navy, and basically, if you have a family of your own, the military takes pretty good care of them.
In fact, they'll even pay for food and housing, or even provide you with military owned middle-class grade houses if available. And when you deploy overseas, you get sea pay, family separation pay, and if it applies to you, hazardous duty pay and imminent danger pay. Also, if you fly on a regular basis you get flight pay as well, or sub pay if you end up on a submarine.
All of this is on top of your normal pay.
Plus the SGLI plan, should the unthinkable happen to you while on duty, will pay your family up to $400,000 in one lump sum, and if they're in military housing, they can stay there for up to 180 days after the date of death.
Basically, if you're in the military, you don't have to worry one bit about your family.
As far as glasses, the military takes care of that too. If you're a pilot or special ops, they'll even approve laser surgery, no questions asked. Other personnel need a special request for it, but generally, it's a good chance you'll get approval if it's bad enough.
The best way to avoid a draft... VOLUNTEER! This way, you don't get stuck doing a job you didn't want. But in reality... unless Iran or North Korea decide to do something incredibly stupid... there won't be a draft.
Truthfully... we're doing pretty good without one.

Provided you're in the US...
You will be paid for your service. You will be paid extra for fighting overseas. You can set up your pay so that you get a portion while your wife and child get the rest.
Eyesight is not something that will prevent you from being drafted unless it is really, really bad. If your problem can be corrected with glasses, you'd still be drafted.

You would get paid just like the ordinary volunteer guys. They have to pay you-and your family would be well taken care of--overseas pay, combat pay along with housing, medical, dental --it all adds up. Exchange and commissary privilages will save your family loads of money. (I miss that)
If you wear glasses, you would be provided with a very hip looking black framed pair. (we called them BC glasses--because they were so ugly, they were like birth control) But I am afraid--that will not save you from coming in.
If you are looking for outs when the draft starts up--(notice I said when not if) old injuries are great. My nephew broke his leg several years ago and has pins in it--he will never serve. Another great way not to get drafted--heart murmurs, flat feet, sleep walking. They pee test for drugs-smoke one before the physical. I could go on and on. However, I was never drafted--I served 12 proud years in the USN--so good luck.

If there was a draft, you would be able to be drafted with glasses. You get get paid the normal salary as based on the payscale, as well as special pays for being deployed. But not everyone who gets drafted goes to war, either.

You cannot fly in the military wearing glasses. Everything else, you are free to choose whatever field you want to work. There is no draft, there will be no draft.
