There is an old joke. There is a big flood, and the town is evacuated. The town preacher decides to stay at the church. The sheriff comes by in his truck. "Preacher! The water's rising, let's go!" "No I have faith that God will save me." And the sheriff drives off. The water rises and floods the first floor of the church. A man rows up in a small boat. "Preacher! The water's rising, come on and let's go!" "No I have faith that God will save me." The man rows off. The water rises higher, and the preacher is clinging to the steeple. A helicopter flys up. "Preacher! The water's rising, let's go!" "No I have faith that God will save me." The copter flys off. The water rises, and the Preacher drowns. He goes to heaven and meets God. "Lord! I was your faithful servant. Why didn't you save me?" "I sent you a truck, a boat, and a helicopter! What more do you want?"

Isn't refusing medicine because of your faith the same thing?

That's a good joke. That's exactly why I don't discard science just because I believe in God. God obviously gave us all brains and He wants us to discover things and help ourselves. God is not going to "save" you if there are logical things you can do to help yourself. Those are His ways of helping. Sometimes people just expect a miracle when they don't realize a simple solution is a miracle sometimes.

That is one of my favorite jokes and I am a Christian. I believe that we should use both Gods instructions and make use of Mans advances in science. I have found no where in the Bible that it tells me to not use a doctor, or in this case not to get in the boat. Unless you just really like to swim. In my belief someone that refuses medicine or a doctors services for religious reasons is a fanatic and if it is their children that need the Doctor then I believe it is child endangerment. Just my belief.

Funny thing about your question. Replace the word "medicine" with "evolution" and 2/3 of your responders will diametrically change their answer. 180 degree flip. Total reversal.

Same logic. Same science. Same God-given, man-made discoveries. But now you're preaching the word of the devil.

Funny.

The experience resulted in the preacher having a conversation with his God.

The preacher went to heaven and discovered God, and that is an excellent example of the intentional use of free-will.

Can't say I've ever heard of refusal of medicine in lieu of religion, to be honest. :P

I HAVE heard this joke though. I like the message it gives. You can't always expect God to be this big, booming voice like He's often portrayed in Renaissance art works and other such medium. You have to look for Him in the world around you. :)

yep. for me it's the same thing. even in the Bible, God can use people to help us. faith can also be considered as faith in medicine and faith that God will make you well through the help of modern medicine.

Yes----I do believe you are right. The Bible speaks of healing in the trees or plants I think doesn't it? He also wants us to use common sense.---your joke was very funny and reminds me of Joe Cochran---------Joe had served the Lord for many many years-----and in all those years Joe was always faithful to NEVER give anything less than 10% of all increase in tithes------and of course his generosity bled over in his giving to include alms and love gifts and supported good ministries whenever he felt it was fertile soil. And the good Lord blessed Joe with a long and healthy life and he did prosper just as the word promised.-well one day Joe was talking to God----and he says---'you know Lord----sometimes I feel like the time is getting close for me to claim my mansion on high'----------well God replied and said: yes my son-----it is now time for you to come on home now.----Joe perked up and said" Lord-------just let me bring all my treasures I have laid up.'--------God smiled and said------no my son----there is nothing you have there that would be of any use to you up here.----Joe moans and crys and grovels and carries on so vehemently that God FINALLY said---------OK---Joe--------I'm going to let you bring just one bag.-----------Joe jumps up and sprints over to the safe and starts filling up his bag with gold coins and ingots--------after he got all the gold in it was all he could do to drag it a few steps----he was gasping for air and sweating profusely---------------POOF-----------Joe enters the gates--------two angels immediately came rushing over for this unprecedented event----------they introduce themselves and immediately begin hounding Joe to see what could POSSIBLY be in that sack from earth????---------finally Joe decides he would show the most persistent angel the treasure he had brought with him.-----the angel takes a peek inside the bag---then looks up at Joe's big grin---------turns to the other angel and whispers"
'he brought paving material'--------'why would anybody wanna carry that around?'---------LOL

God uses us as a tool to help the others.
