Since your boyfriend is from here, he should have a pretty good idea of where to go so I wouldn't personally invest too much time/money in tours or cruises. Ask him to show you all the places most New Yorkers never go, like the Statue of liberty, Empire state building, etc. :) lol. I'd also recommend looking beyond the obvious places like Times Square, etc. as there are many great places to eat, shop and party in areas like the Village, South Street Seaport, LES, etc.. That's not to say you shouldn't experience places like Times Square, just realize that it's not the be all, end all, place to be in NYC. Depending on when you come, there are outdoor concerts, street fairs and great museum expos. There's a calendar of events on the NYC Tourist Center.

I think if you're going to NYC for the first time, you SHOULD do the touristy things. Go to the top of the Empire State Building. Go to Times Square. Definitely take in a Broadway show. You can get half-price tickets the day of. I've heard they moved the TKTS booth out of Duffy Square, don't know if that's true.
I mean, you can go to a club anywhere, just about, but no place else has the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc.
If you can get him to go shopping, go to Macy's in Herald Square. Right outside will be familiar to you if you've ever watched the Thanksgiving Parade.
Have fun!
P.S. Hey, do they still have the NBC studio tour? That would be fun. I did that once, long ago, and my family and I were the only New Yorkers there--but why should people miss out on that kind of thing just because they live here?

Definately stop to see the Twin Towers site, Empire State Building, maybe a talk show(Montel, Regis and Kelly), Hang out in the Village, A romantic restaurant is One if By land on Barrow St. There are so many to choose from. Walk around Times Square there's plenty to see and do w/ so much activity. I'm not much for the club scene but I'll tell you to stay clear of the China Club they always have problems. Have a good time.

Take the televison and movie tour. Hundreds of movies and television shows are filmed each year in NYC. Contact the city's film agency to get a map showing where the films and shows were filmed.
