Seems to me that it causes nothing but problems and doesn't offer any more utility than some web based mail systems.

I dont know what problems you are refering to. I have used outlook express for years and have not had any complaints except one.

The built in Usnet Reader does not support yenc, so I have to use a proxy, but other then that no complaints.

I use it so I can download my mail locally instead of taking up my mail server space with emails from 2, 3 and more years ago, which I do keep if I deem them important.

Im not a Microsoft Phoebe/Hater so if it works for my uses I use it.

Its a good (cheap) bundled alternative for ppl who wish to use a pop/imap account . Its simple and it works. Web based options just do not provide a lot of functionality (read recipts are just one example)

Because it comes with every single copy of windows and doesn't require additional purchase.

Sure it's a piece of trash but it's there.

I agree. the only benefit i see is that if you, for some reason, do not have internet access, you still have access to your mail, as opposed to a webmail.

oh, and it's free.

Your right, I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but it is installed right there for you. I guess some people don't want to make an effort to go find a better software. I reccomend: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
