"Scientists said the earth was flat, how can you trust science?"
Scientists are the reasons we know the earth is not flat, it was religious people who killed scientists for even thinking that the earth could be anything but flat. Religious people kill scientists for thinking that the earth moved around the sun.
Science has always been trying to find out how thing really work, and religion is always trying to stop it. Science can be wrong, when it is, they look for another explination. Never has science chalked it out to miracles.

The thing they don't know is science accepts being proven wrong. You can't advance in anything if your aren't allowed to question.(sound familiar)

Dude, you should come up with a different analogy.
Certainly during the Middle Ages, people knew that the earth was round. To quote Barbara Tuchman on the 1300s: "Long before Columbus, they knew the world was a globe, a knowledge proceeding from familiarity with the movement of the stars, which could be made comprehensible only in terms of a spherical earth. In a vivid image, it was said by the cleric Gautier de Merz in his 'Image de Monde', the most widely read encyclopedia of the time, that a man could go around the world as a fly makes the tour of an apple."

Humans are, in general, an arrogant bunch. I have no arguments with the scientific method....I'm an engineer myself, I spend day after day trying to figure out how things tick. Science seeks to increase our knowledge and understanding of the world around us....nothing wrong with that.
The problem comes when people try to use their own knowledge to elevate themselves above God. They think, "Look at how smart we are...look at how much we know about the universe...we've figured out that God can't possibly exist because we all look so much like monkeys." Science is not the problem....mankind's arrogance is the problem. Science merely provides a platform from which to preach that man is a god unto himself.
I agree that the "earth is flat" line is a little tired. However, it's used to illustrate a simple point that placing your faith in yourself and your own knowledge is foolish because our understanding of the universe which surrounds us is hopelessly fallible...and that's a fact. I don't feel that religion has sought to suppress scientific discovery. I do think, however, that it's only natural that you would see some resistance to the efforts of scientists to destroy God.

You don't get out often, do you? Why do you assume that all believers are "against" science? Why do you assume that believers think they can't be wrong? I see believer's questions on here all the time asking for help in understanding something about the Bible. If they felt they were never wrong as you assume, I doubt they'd be in this forum as often as they are. What science exactly is "religion" trying to stop? Do not medical and scientific ethicists ever weigh in on issues pertaining to science and medicine? Or do they relegate that to "religious folks"? I just love it when you foolish and intolerant atheists make such hypocrites out of yourselves. Love it.

I love it when ignorant people post things like this. for instants it was the Jews 3000+ years ago that said the earth was round. and it was a christian who read the bible that found the currents in the ocean because the Bible said so, even though scientists said he was stupid for reading the bible. I'm neutral on religions. your arrogant, ignorant and willingly stupid. so these are cases of science proving the bible right. huh go figure. Grow up get a life and actually study before hating something you don't understand

While I agree with what you're saying (to a degree), it's broad generalization about all people who happen to be religious. There are a few out there that don't believe science is evil or try to stop it. The ones that do just don't want anything to change. They're using religion to try to justify why they want someone stopped because they fear change. The bible doesn't say that science is bad or not to explore this planet (and beyond).
The people who say something as flippant as "How can you trust science" are just as bad as the people who don't want anyone to believe anything that they don't believe. Those people have issues with or without religion. It's just a hell of a lot easier to wrap ignorance in religion instead of saying "I'm scared of what I don't know or can't explain".

We are all human beings. This means we all have our faults and foibles. Personally, I think scientists tend to have fewer faults. They are often not as hypocritical, and they tend NOT to promote ignorance as much as do the devout.
But I dislike this notion of setting the two crowds against one another. So long as religion embraces science and eschews superstition, it can be a fine thing. Unfortunately, in our world, the most vocal people of faith tend to come off sounding like antiscience backwater inbreds. This makes ALL religions look bad, when some of them I think are fine.
It is a minority group who thinks you must reject science, reason, and logic in order to achieve "salvation." The fewer who fall for that, the better off we will all be.
Who is the ultimate author of science? Regardless of your answer to this question, rejection of science serves no valid purpose--unless perhaps you come up with "Satan." In that case, you are probably truly lost.

since you believe that science is to be trusted more than God, how can you explain a person being dead for days being brought back to life......i am sure all of us here would love to know the answer to that.
can science explain the prophesies?
can science explain the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ?
can science explain how an embryo is formed in the womb?
there are lots of things scientists themselves dare not say or explain cuz deep down in their soul they believe that there is a God who is in charge of the universe.

And what about oxygen evolution?
It was science that claimed that all plants used Carbon Dioxide to produce Oxygen, this was later found to be incorrect and that "Green" plants produce Oxygen from water not Carbon Dioxide, and they need light to do so. My point is that although science may eventually get the right answer sometimes it takes them hundreds of years of pushing wrong theories before they eventually get something right. Science is not infallible.

yeah that's definitely the plus of science, it allows itself to be corrected in its mistakes, whereas religion does not. It is a source of optimism for the future of superstition.
and there can definitely be science without religion.
