I agree with your husband. Although how long have you been back to school? Were you strong in math before? Did you pay attention in school or were you not interested in school, thus why you dropped out?

If you've only been back a few weeks, then just keep on attending and hopefully you'll get back on the proverbial bicycle in no time. If you were not strong in math before and really didn't pay attention in school the few years before you dropped out, then you just might not have retained the knowledge you were taught in the first place. People remember things through repetitive learning, so if you weren't repetitively working with math, then you might not have gotten it "fixed" in your brain.

My suggestion is if you have only been back in school a very short time (a few weeks) then give it maybe one or two more weeks, depending on how often you have class, and if that doesn't spark your memory then seek out a teacher/tutor about help.

Just stick with it!! It may seem hard and you may feel like you want to quit, but stick through it. Having a HS diploma is more important than you think. In the state of Texas, any inmate in the prison system (if in long enough) when paroled or released from prison will have a GED or Diploma. This is part of the rehabilitation process. I'm not comparing you with an inmate (I promise), but I'm just saying that many jobs require them. So, stick with it and get help if you need it. There is no shame in asking for help.

Hey, math is hard! Cheer up buttercup! Maybe you don't even need to pursue that diploma, if you are super creative you can think of something else super cool, fun, or interesting that can occupy your time or serve as a very lucrative career. If you really want the diploma go for it, but if you think outside the box you will be fine without it!

You cannot be stupid, your writing is far too clear!

You are not stupid. Math is difficult for those of us who actually like it. I have a BS and finished 2 years of calculus. I still have problems doing basic math. I have been out of school for 3 years and I still have to take time to review basic algebra because i have forgotten a lot of it. Use flashcards, and review it everyday it will eventually return. Good luck on getting your diploma it's hard work but worth it.

Oh, you are definately not stupid! Your husband is right about this. Teacher's have a saying that addresses this exact dilemma. "Recency, frequency," and oh, no! I've forgotten the end of the saying! Really. Any way, it means that in order to remember something, you have to keep it recent, repete it frequently, and keep up dating it. Otherwise, you forget it. So forgotten math is quite common. I forgot math when I had to take my first college math class after 10 years, too. In fact, I flunked the first one when I took it.

No, you are not stupid. For one thing, you made a good decision to fix your earlier mistake and go back to school. Your husband is right; some people tend to forget these things if they don't use them for a while. Get yourself some tutoring help or, if you can't do that, a basic textbook to remind you of the rules, and you should be fine.

You just need to get back in the swing of things, then you'll catch up. You'd be surprised at how a little refresher will bring it all back to you.

If you start freaking out about decimals, just think of them in the context of money. You always deal with decimals when talking about money, so you aren't as out of touch as you may think.

Go to the store and get that software that makes learning fun. They are like video games and you can stay up all night doing them, learning tons of valuable information, and have a good time.
