When asking God to provide, lets say a canoe to cross a river, one should not then sit down and wait for him to bring it and place in front of you.
Helping yourself is like putting legs on the prayer. God may have chosen to put the canoe needed to cross the river right around the next bend.
BTW I've read the Bible several times and nowhere have I seen anything about stoning one's disobedient children. I would really like to read that passage. Can you please cite chapter and verse for your reference?

In my religion - Religious Science - we call our prayer "Spiritual Mind Treatment" - and it is not about asking God for things. When I pray - what I do is:
1) Recognize that there is a God with fabulous qualities
2) Unify myself with It
3) Realize that if God has those fabulous qualities - and I am unified with It - then I must have all of those fabulous qualities too.
4) Show gratitude for the way things are
5) Release my prayer into the Universe.
So - for example - say I need to do well at a job interview - I might say this prayer.
I know that there is a big, beatiful, fabulous, smart God. A God that knows everything. And of course It could ace an interview easily. And I am part of God. It works through me. And since I'm part of God - I get to have all of those fabulous qualities working through me. I am capable of acing an interview. I possess all the knowledge necessary to do well. God gave it to me!!! I am so grateful for that. And as I release this prayer - I know I can go off to my interview KNOWING that God is with me - and working through me - and I will be fabulous - just like GOD. And so it is!!
We have a saying about how we do prayer (Spiritual Mind Treatment) we say .... "Treat and beat your feet" - and that means you should pray - and KNOW that God is working through you - and then get to WORK using all of your God-given qualities.
Very much the same as "God helps those who help themselves" It's not going to do all of the work for us. It's already given us what we need to do the work. That's pretty HUGE!
Namaste!

Verily, God does not change men's condition unless they change their inner selves;
That is from the Qur'an, Chapter 13, verse 11. The commentary is below.
Lit., "that which is in themselves". This statement has both a positive and a negative connotation: i.e., God does not withdraw His blessings from men unless their inner selves become depraved (cf. 8:53), just as He does not bestow His blessings upon wilful sinners until they change their inner disposition and become worthy of His grace. In its wider sense, this is an illustration of the divine law of cause and effect (sunnat Allah) which dominates the lives of both individuals and communities, and makes the rise and fall of civilizations dependent on people's moral qualities and the changes in "their inner selves".(Quran Ref: 13:11 )
In other words, Allah Almighty does not support you and bring you victory if you yourself is very bad and sinful, heedless and disobey your God, the Creator.

I have not read that in the Bible. That was something that man made up as usual and inserted God's name in it. May God Bless U.

Cute avatar name. As has been stated before, that phrase is NOT in the Bible and any educated Christian does not use it nor advocate it. Blessings to you.

You have to be willing to help yourself because its just like being a drug addict who wants to quit taking drugs noone can help them till they decide that there tired of being that way and want to change. That is the same way with god helping you he wants you to help take part in it and be open to his help..

I always thought you couldn't help yourself unless God gave you the strength to help yourself and then it's still your decision.
