actually, there are three different switches in the brake system that will turn this light on, A) low fluid level switch (not the best idea to add fluid, level is actualy a good indicator of brake pad condition. B)pressure differential switch, lets you know when there is a problem in the brakes. brakes are typicaly devided into two halves, and have been since the '60s. if you have a pressure loss in half of the brakes, 1) the light comes on and 2) you will notice an increased effort needed to stop the vehicle.
C) the parking brake switch, any time you engage the parking brake, a light on the dash comes on "BRAKE" it is possible to have the parking brake barley engaged, with out slowing the vehicle. it is also possible to have a switch go bad or out of adjustment, and have the sam effect.

A: if brakes are old, change them
A2: if you change them, make sure to bleed them also ( air pressure in the lines can cause the light to come on also)
B: Check your parking brake
B2: your parking brake release cable could be wedged somewhere and is sticking a little to where it doesnt slow your vehicle
C: Check fluid a week after you fill it

Hi this might sound stupid but did you accidently push the emergengy brake, just pushing it down a little bit will set the brake light off , I would check to see if it was pushed by pulling the release, sometimes the pedal might need to be pulled back up while pulling the release handle.

It can be a leaky brake caliper or wheel cylinder, a defective master cylinder, a bad proportioning valve, a bad brake booster. Basically it has to be checked out properly.
