I know it's going to sound like the stupidest fear ever
but I'm really afraid of killer whales, well just whales in general but preferably killer whales.
I don't know why exactly, I'm just afraid of them, I've been to Sea World a lot of times, but no matter how many times I go I'm super scared of them.
I'm not going to go to a professional or anything anyone suggests, I need to help myself somehow.
I just want to be able to look at pictures of them and not be afraid or anything.
Please help!

The reason I want to get over this fear is because I am planning to swim with one sometime in my life, I've always wanted to even though I've always been afraid of them, I guess it's a real way to get over my fear. But I want to be able to look at one without closing my eyes or running away. Btw: thanks to all of those who took the time to answer my question! I really appreciate it!

Well, I can't say that I've ever heard of someone who was afraid of killer whales, but I'm sure it's possible.
I'm not sure what the root of your problem is. Generally when someone is afraid of something, there is a reason for that fear. Unless you had a negative experience with a killer whale, which is unlikely, I don't see how you could be afraid of them. Perhaps it is something else that is triggering your fear, and you associate killer whales with it.
Ok, let's discuss killer whales and shed some new light on them. If you get to know them better, then you will be able to overcome your problem with them. Kind of like facing a dog you think is going to bite you, but turns out to lick you instead. Ok?
Killer whales get a bad rap, and undeservingly so. Their name is such a misnomer, because they are generally pretty gentle creatures. Of course they are air breathing mammals. In the wild, they feed on seals mostly. Generally they don't attack anything unprovoked, but have been known to assault sharks, which may not always be a bad thing. The mother killer whales are fiercely loyal to their children, and are very protective of them. I always found that a nice thing to see, especially in the wild.
The killer whales in Sea World prove that they are not only gentle creatures, but intelligent and trainable as well. Most accidents involving killer whales was due to mishandling by the persons in their charge. These whales are big creatures, and sometimes accidents happen when training them. But I've never really heard of any killer whale attacks on a trainer.
One of the best pictures of killer whales I ever saw was a trainer holding a fish, the whale would slide up on it's belly, and it appeared, from the frontal view, to have this big smile. I always liked killer whales, but I got a love for them after seeing that photo.
It always amazed me how gentle these creatures are, given their size and power. Why anyone would name them "killer" is beyond me. They are far from it. I think it's because they feed on larger whale species and that gave them the reputation that they have. But you know, that is how God programmed them. Each species is here for the purpose God intended. And the killer whales have their purpose. I don't believe that He placed them here to put fear in the hearts of man. But unfortunately, these fine creatures have been on the receiving end of hurt by mankind. And for that, I feel terribly sorry for them.
Perhaps you can face your fear by learning more about them. And come to realize that they are genuinely good creatures. Their photos will not hurt you, you know that. You have to come to grips with that fact, and I think you will overcome it. Study them, learn about them, and I think you will grow to love them as much as I do, and many other people.
Best wishes.

Start with picture of whale and imagine something you really like-ice cream, chocolate. Keep picture away from you at first and then gradually bring it closer as you are thinking of good things. If this works then go to Sea World and just think about whales and something good. Don't even get near the whale tank. Find DVD with whale and again think of good things when you see whale. Once you can think of whales and feel good things you are cured.Be patient and you do not have to go see a real whale ever if you don't want to.

well...just to give you a little educational background. Killer whales are not whales. They belong to the dolphin oceanic family. They call them killer 'whales' because they 'kill' whales to feed on...they prefer the California grey whales (which are the largest whales in existance currently)They are completely harmless (most times) when it comes to humans (hence the fun about Sea World) So, maybe if you view them as dolphins...they won't be so scary!?
