My state return was direct deposited today 3/29/07. Do you think that means they might have fixed my federal and I will get it tomorrow??

You mean u e-file was accepted. Do not worry you have to wait until IRS send you why your return is being question. It could be a number of reason. Your tax preparer could tell you if you went to a professional. You can call, visit and ask them. JUst wait and send them what they ask for. I can not tell u because i did not prepare your taxes, but these are some reasons: Children, dependents, W-2, itemized, etc. I realize you were expecting that money but you have to be patient until IRS notifies u.Tax Topic 151 will not help until u know what to appeal or not.

State returns have nothing to do with federal, so getting your state refund doesn't mean that your federal is OK.

What the IRS is saying is that they've identified something on your return that doesn't look correct. One possibility would be that you claimed a dependent that somebody else also claimed - then they'd ask for proof of which of you was really allowed to claim the person. There are hundreds of other possibilities, than's just one.

When you get the letter, respond to it fully and honestly, as quickly as possible but definitely within the 30 days.

You stated that they gave you a no. to call, so I would call it. Also, I would start investigating tax attornies just in case. One of my friends recieved a similar letter and it was nothing. Just something in there return jumped out and thier return for that year was reviewed. It took about 1 1/2 months for everything to go through and for them to recieve thier check. However, my husband recieved a sim. letter when he was a server and ended up getting audited. Everything was OK in the long run, but it was a long and grulling process.

Good luck, it may take months for them to get around to asking you for the additional documentation. Probably there is no problem, you have just been randomly selected for an audit.
Your state refund is not related to your federal return, so that does not mean anything.

Don't worry this isn't a big deal and remember you can stall the IRS forever if it is something that turns troublesome. Most auditors are on your side. If a great deal of money is involved bring an expert with you.
I remember getting a similar letter and they sent me more money than I filed for. Relax.
Cover yourself by finding out about your congress person and what committees they are on. Nothing sobers up a bureaucrat like a letter of concern from Congress.

do you owe child support or any past due bills that were sent to a collection agency??? if not...sometimes when the numbers are off they want to look at it themselves.
