i've been having all sorts of chest pains and stomach issues since my 2nd child was born....for a good few months after she was born, my docs were trying to convince me to go on meds for post pardom depression....i really didn't want to take anything from what i've heard from other people...so more and more lately, i've been under a lot of stress and i had more chest pains and the doc told me he thinks i'm too stressed out and its causing these pains and he thinks that i have anxiety/depression...
he is just my regular doc, not a psychiatrist or anything...how can he tell me "this is what you have and here are some meds to help you sleep at night"...i don't talk to him or tell him anything about my life for him to make that judgement...i would think he would need to know more, wouldn't you?...
i just don't know what i should do...i wanna say he knows what he's doing but i've been dealing with this for 16 months now and it seems like he doesn't have enough info to base this on...help!

get a referral to or seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, regarding stress and other symptoms of depression. they can discuss the problem with you more in depth, and can refer you to a psychiatrist for medicine, if necesarry. at least that's how I got diagnosed and treated, with varying degrees of success.
for the stress, I'd recommend light to moderate cardio exercise, some breathing exercises, meditation, ask your doc about these as he/she may want to do some tests about the pains you are describing, just to rule out other things.
good luck, and to your health.

Check to see if there are any Sliding Scale psychiatrist's in your area. Your first intial visit is just getting information but the 2nd visit should help determine your issues. It will take a couple visits but usually it helps. Some Family Doctors will offer trial meds for deppression but they don't tell you much- just reccommend you to a psych. doc. A psychologist is a doc that will just help without meds but a psychiatrist will give you meds. It's up to you really. Hope this helps a bit.

I was diagnosed by my family doctor . she asked me , when was the last time I really had a day i felt good, and it had been about 6 months I went on Effexor but it had side effects . Paxil XL worked for a year then we found at pair Welbutrin Sr and Lexapro. I feel so much better now. i sleep well i can go almost all day without getting pissed off or have anxiety. I was skeptical about taking theses drugs, but my day to day life is so much better than before. my friends can notice a huge difference, I actually look forward to a new day, completely opposite from before.

Your doctor is right and you should tell him all your feelings and symptoms. If he offers you medicine get it and take it as directed. You will feel so much better. I have anxiety/depression and dont know where I would be now if I hadnt gotten the medicine.
Good Luck

srry to hear...i have been diagnosed w/ severe anxiety
but 1st before you get diagnosed you need to be fully checked physical wise and also blood test and check your heart...then you can be diagnosed...never let them tell you that you have anxiety with out all that being checked..i went through that....because my chest pains and heart rate would get so bad id be so scared...and i goto mental health here for counsiling and i have a case manager and before the head doc there could diagnose me they had me fully check to rule out anything else serious...goodluck

Trust your family doctor he has seen a lot of things in his career, there are also many symptoms that he can observe without having you explain about your life. Ask him to make you a referral to professionals who can help you more in depth that are covered by your insurance.

There is no objective test for depression.. It is diagnosed based on theory, belief, and opinions only..
