We can't say what has delayed your wisdom teeth up to this point and we also can not say whether removing them is necessary of the best thing to do.

As far as removing the wisdom teeth instead of the second molars... Assuming you have all or most of your teeth, the second molars are in the proper position with proper contacts to the adjacent and opposing teeth. If you take them out and let the wisdom teeth remain, they will tend to be "free agents" and sort of choose their own position. They will not be as helpful in chewing and could even lead to a discrepency in your bite that would lead to TMJ problems.

I agree with Dr. Albert. If you have any questions about whether your wisdom teeth need to be removed and if thsi is the best choice, a second opinion might be helpful. I know you can't just pick a name out of the phone book, but you might consult with an oral surgeon.

I'm not an expert but my experience is they don't push other teeth after 20s. I lost one of first molars before 20 an wishdom push other from back and they closed the gap. but I lost other first molar after 25 and gap couldn't filled by others. after 20 wisdoms don't push other teeth too much. I don't think that if they extract the other molars, wisdoms will slide and take a place of them. My upper third molars lean to sides. Since they are hard to brushed they can decay quickly and cause some chewing problem.
But don't let them extract if you don't have any problem. Extraction change chewing habits even sleeping habits. Also I red about extraction may effect taste nerves and cause decreasing on taste sense. Wait them to start to lean or decay or be a problem. Sometimes they don't cause any problem.

i dont know why they'd just be coming in at 40 but if you keep them, even by pulling the mollers, they'll shift all your other teeth and they can cause gum problems. i've gotta get my wisdom removed too, i've got sympathy for you...

"wisdom" teeth can be harmful to your jaw. its the way they grow. also, complications to you sinuses and ears. its all conected, trust me, so been there! mine grew along my lower jaw(not up like normal teeth), horrible surgery, but i feel so much better for it! the wisdom teeth actually caused throart costriction! swelling in the jaw each time they grew aggrivated my neck muscles, ears, sinuses, etc.
@ 40, they won't just "fill" the place of your molars. it just doesn't work that way. but if the molars are bothering you(the ones w/fillings) do something about it now!
good health to you!

Pull them, the dentist is right. They can effe your other teeth up! It's because they're REALLY big and WAY back, and push your other teeth.

I waited, then they started to effe mine up, so I pulled them. Should have done it sooner.
